It's #WorldDiabetesDay We are proudly co-funding a prestigious and competitive Diabetes UK RD Lawrence Fellowship awarded to Dr Giulia De Rossi at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology . The aim of this funding is to support early career researchers with the potential to become leaders in diabetes research. Dr De Rossi is searching for new ways to prevent damage to the blood vessels in the eye and treat early stages of diabetes-related eye disease. It's World Keratoconus day! Keratoconus is a condition which causes the cornea – the clear front of the eye – to get thinner and distorted over time. This results in blurred vision and sometimes even sight loss. We’re delighted that the Schroder Foundation and Family have donated £1 million to Moorfields Eye Charity towards the new centre for advancing eye health to enhance education in the centre. Their gift will promote learning and collaborations for researchers, clinicians, trainees and students from all over the world. Oriel is the joint partnership between Moorfields Eye Hospital, London , the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and the charity that will move services from City Road, Islington to a new, integrated centre in St Pancras, Camden, opening in 2027. The centre will help push the boundaries of eye research, delivering breakthrough treatments to the front line of patient care. Innovative and flexible education spaces within the new eye health centre are designed for both face-to-face and online learning and for multiple uses including hands-on skills practice, informal discussions, multi-disciplinary meetings and lectures. Equipped with high-spec audio-visual technology, they allow immersive learning experiences. The gift from The Schroder Foundation and Family is in memory of the late Bruno Schroder and reflects their interests in and support of education, collaboration and eye health. Philanthropy is critical to the delivery of the new eye health centre and The Schroder Foundation and Family’s generous gift will help create this world class teaching environment. Spend an hour with retinal genetic disease researcher Professor Omar Mahroo! The NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre invites you to its new coffee hour series where you can hear about research in different areas of eye care. This is a friendly informal event where you (and your family, friends and/or carers) will have the opportunity to hear about research taking place at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology , ask the researcher questions, and provide input that could shape the future of eye care research.
