The science of wellbeing 🌱 Anyone with access to green spaces knows that plants and nature have the power to improve our mood. But why is this? We're using the Wellbeing Garden at RHS Garden Wisley to conduct studies into how and why green spaces can have such a positive effect. The Wellbeing Garden was designed by award-winning designer Matt Keightley in collaboration with RHS Wellbeing Fellow Dr Lauriane Chalmin-Pui, the curatorial team at Wisley as well as experts in neuroscience and mental health. Lauriane and PhD student Bethany Harries have also compiled a list of elements to improve mental health, recommending “Soothing sounds of gently flowing water, tall grasses rustling in the breeze, or even wind chimes help foster serenity, while adding plants that provide food for birds (or a bird feeder) brings in restorative birdsong.” Find out more about what gardening and nature can do for your wellbeing: https://lnkd.in/d9N2Rsqn #NationalStressAwarenessDay #Wellbeing #RHS

Do you need a big garden to create a habitat for wildlife? At the 2024 RHS John MacLeod annual lecture, urban ecologist Dr Mark Goddard debunked common myths about wildlife gardening to illustrate that anyone, anywhere, can create a biodiverse garden. “Larger gardens do generally contain more plant species, microhabitats and wildlife-friendly features,” Dr Goddard says. “But a study in Sheffield has shown that garden size doesn’t actually correlate at all to invertebrate richness.” Research by Dr Nick Tew during a PhD with the RHS and the University of Bristol also found no correlation between size of garden and the amount of nectar available for pollinators: what was planted in those gardens, and how they were managed, was far more significant. No matter how small your space, you can still provide valuable habitat and resources for wildlife – even if it’s just on a balcony or in a window box.
