Children diagnosed with brain tumours face numerous challenges, one of the most significant being the difficulty in forming and maintaining the friendships they would naturally have had in their community and schools. Tom’s Trust clinical psychologists support our families with their return to school following treatment. Dr Meghan Owens, Tom’s Trust clinical psychologist at Alder Hey says: “A big part of our work is to support children back into school. After a neuropsychological assessment we will make suggestions to a child’s school on how they can adapt their curriculum and school environment to meet the needs of that child. A lot of schools have never had a child who has gone through a brain tumour diagnosis. We help to make the transition as smooth as possible. Children can lose confidence and look visibly different. We are delighted to announce that we have funded the first ever UK-wide project that will explore the differences in access to psychological care within childhood brain tumour services across UK primary care trusts. The pilot year-long project seeks to understand the implications this inequality has on access to clinical trials. The project has been launched by a team at the Great North Children’s Hospital at The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is led by Dr Sarah Verity. Rebecca Wood, CEO of Tom’s Trust, said: “We are excited to fund this project. We know there are huge differences in the care that children with brain tumours receive across the UK and Tom’s Trust strongly believes that every child with a brain tumour should have access to the mental health support that they need, as well as their loved ones." Tom’s Trust has pledged to support the Anti-Bullying Alliance #AntiBullyingWeek2024 . We are using this week to highlight the real problem that bullying is for the children that we support. We know that bullying is sadly, an all-too-common experience for school-aged children. As many as one in four of all children will experience bullying at some point growing up. However, for children returning to school after cancer treatment, these numbers are even higher, with between 32% and 49% reporting some form of bullying. This #TrusteesWeek , we are shining a light on the important work our trustees do. A trustee oversees a charity's operations, ensures it fulfils its mission, manages funds responsibly, complies with laws, and acts in the charity's best interests without personal gain. Our eight trustees provide their time and expertise voluntarily to Tom’s Trust, and we are incredibly grateful for the time and energy that they give. As we celebrate the launch of our fourth service covering the Thames Valley, one of our inspiring Young Ambassadors, Riley, narrates our video explaining the vital role our clinical psychologists play in supporting children with brain tumours. The care provided by our Tom's Trust psychologists, helps children and their families navigate the emotional and psychological challenges that come with a diagnosis.
