The Managing Director and founder of the fund is John Harthorne, former CEO and founder of MassChallenge, the most startup-friendly accelerator on the planet. Through MassChallenge’s global network of accelerators in Boston, Israel, Switzerland, Mexico, Rhode Island, Austin and Houston, and unrivalled access to corporate partners, MassChallenge entrepreneurs are creating a massive impact - driving growth and creating value the world over. John left MassChallenge in 2019 to launch Two Lanterns Venture Capital, a seed fund focused on capital-efficient startups poised to create massive impact.

Michal Gilon-Yanai is a Partner at 2LVC. She founded and directed entrepreneurship programs in three academic institutions in the US and in Israel, most recently at the NYU school of medicine. She became the founding executive director of the MBA Innovation & Entrepreneurship track at IDC, Israel in 2010. Between 2014-2016, Michal managed two programs at MIT’s entrepreneurship center, and in her most recent role, she developed and headed the NYU Biomedical Entrepreneurship Program.

Five insights gleaned from the recent Intel Ignite & Two Lanterns Venture Capital: AI Innovation Night at the MIT Media Lab:
1) Massachusetts Institute of Technology prof to prof: Speaking with Hari Balakrishnan, Ramesh Raskar said #decentralizedAI is coming. I say for Domino Data Lab and Vultr, the future is already here as they are currently enabling #inference at the edge.
2) Ramesh also said that in the totality of #AI use cases in business, #generativeAI will play a very small role compared to #traditionalAI, which begs the question “How much higher will the pricetag for genAI fomo go?”
3) Patricia Geli of C10 Labs drew distinctions between #screenAI and #dimensionalAI, where dimensional “transcends the limitations of 2D screens to employ AI to address real-world challenges.” Starting an AI software company is comparatively easy; but starting a company around dimensional AI may be the fast track to competitive advantage. (And maybe the faster path to saving the world.)
4) Alex Finkelstein of Spark Capital said that unlike previous technological innovations that tended to cause more disruption for laborers and tradespeople, AI is far more likely to disrupt white-collar professions. Sounds like professional flexibility is still the key.
5) G20 Ventures’ Mike Troiano had the best quip of the night: “Startups succeed by acts of individual heroism. Companies succeed by repeatable processes.” Hard to argue with that one!
