What a year! *sigh of relief* 😅 

FY2023 was a rollercoaster (to say the least)! We saw both the lofty highs of valuation as we closed out 2022, and then felt the pull-back in the VC market and more broadly, the Australian economy. Despite the motion sickness, this was an incredible time of growth, reflection and opportunity for Archangel. 

We achieved a number of key milestones. You almost wouldn’t believe that it was just over 12 months ago that we launched our flagship fund (the 2022 Fund)!

• Closed our fund at ~A$40M, which wouldn’t be possible without our investors and the broader community that have supported us and our founders (thank you!).

• Welcomed Sandra Suen to the team as an investment associate, working alongside our team on deals and supporting our portfolio founders.

• Made 24 investments (often with co-investment from remarkable VCs in the Australian ecosystem), taking our total portfolio to 50 portfolio companies and 90+ founders.

• Continued to build our presence i) locally in the early-stage scene through events and our Founder community, and ii) internationally by taking early steps to expanding our networks into the UK and the US. 

More importantly, our portfolio companies have taken leaps and bounds! We’re so proud to share just a few (in no particular order):

• pearler: At the heart of everything Pearler does are their three pillars - community, long-term investment and financial literacy. To build on this mission, Pearler launched the Get Rich Slow Club podcast, which debuted at #2 in the Aussie Business Podcasts charts!! This is a great educational tool for young people and first-time investors.

• BodyGuide: BodyGuide is on a mission to prevent injuries by improving health literacy. BodyGuide will be partnering with Multiplex and La Trobe University on a unique research project for injury prevention alongside deep industry engagement.

• One Future Football: Launched their virtual worldwide soccer league, with 12 super clubs, 250+ players from 80+ countries. The season has kicked off, and we can’t wait to see some of the jam-packed games and big storylines in store!

• Primary: Primary is the modern OS for treasury management. So, it’s only fitting that they launched an informed treasury management guide for Australian start-ups.

• PUSHAS: Pushas has become the go-to place if you’re in Australia and looking for hype apparel. What does hype mean? Before web3 and AI, hype was in sneakers and apparel. If that still doesn’t make sense, check out their YouTube channel (or TikTok if you’re so inclined). 

• Atelier: Atelier has launched its world-first cloud-based manufacturing solution, which will significantly shorten product development cycles for beauty brands of all sizes.

As an early stage VC, naturally, you'll spend each day trying to sift through the universe of startups to find those that fit your thesis and will deliver venture scale returns. Some investors may follow the crowd, the zeitgeist or hype of the moment as new themes emerge that capture the public imagination, press and waves of capital.

At the moment the current hype is AI and LLMs. Serious money is being spent by Big Tech, scaleups, startups and investors to chase the latest ‘paradigm shift’*. We've already seen some exciting developments around content creation (text, images, video and even music) and some promising productivity gains, but expect that there will be much greater yet to come.

Paradoxically, the biggest companies are often not started during the hype cycle. Nonetheless they have all benefited from 'hype', either in raising public awareness for something they are first movers to, or creating the fertile ground for their innovation, once most competitors have given up during the trough of disillusionment.

A good part of Archangel Ventures' thesis, as an early stage investor, is trying to invest in companies outside the hype cycle. We’re not always going to be right but we believe the greatest potential for returns is to be non-consensus and (hopefully) right!

We’ve backed nearly 50 companies in the last few years and are continuing to invest through this VC winter. We’re doing a final close of our fund next month.
