📊 It’s interesting to look at the asset allocation of large professional investment managers around the globe and how those asset allocations have changed over the years. 

📈 One of the best performing endowment funds in the U.S., the Yale Endowment, has shifted its asset mix significantly over the years. The chart below illustrates how the asset mix was primarily domestic equity in 1985, whereas by 2020, the portfolio was dominated by ‘alternative’ investments, such as venture capital, absolute return, leveraged buyouts (private equity) and natural resources. 

🚀 The adoption of alternatives by large institutions illustrates how the venture capital asset class has evolved within the overall investment landscape. While venture may be a less familiar and sometimes opaque asset class to some, it has proven that it is able to create outsized value and produce attractive long-term financial returns for many sophisticated investors.

💸 Historically, the #venturecapital asset class generates return dispersions that are relatively wider than other asset classes. #Dispersion signifies the variability or spread of returns, in this case, within a single asset class. 

📊 The chart below from PitchBook shows the fund dispersion for various #alternativeasset classes. Venture capital (shown as “VC” on the chart) has the highest fund performance dispersion, meaning that venture capital funds had the widest spread between the top returning funds and the bottom returning funds. 

💰 Investors are often interested in asset classes with wider return dispersion because there is the potential for greater returns if they can find #skilledmanagers who perform at the higher end of the dispersion band. 

📈 By contrast, in asset classes with historically lower dispersion spreads - such as #fixedincome or US #publicequities - the potential difference in returns generated by skilled managers compared to less skilled managers is generally much smaller.
