We met Cruz Foam in 2019 in Santa Cruz. John Felts and Toby Corey kindly spent time explaining the vision of Cruz Foam and their small research warehouse. We loved the vision and the small team and invested over multiple rounds. Some 4+ years later the small team and warehouse have grown massively. They have investor and ambassadors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Ashton Kutcher. And their mission of replacing polystyrene foam with a world first truely viable biodegradable alternative and vision of removing single-use plastic from the mainstream business supply chain is rapidly coming true. We’re pleased to announce MGA Thermal has closed an additional $5.7 million in funding, taking its recent round total to approximately $14 million, to prove the scale and industrial capabilities of its thermal energy storage systems. This round was supported by returning investors including Main Sequence , The Melt and new investor Jekara Group . I talk to a lot of LPs (investors in funds) and they tell me one of the main draws to VC is that they can make an indirect impact on the world. I think too often VCs are not funding anything truly ground breaking or impactful and opting for trendy or a fast buck. But building something truly transformative and pioneering takes time, a lot of false starts, flame outs and unwavering energy (and 100 other things) and maybe, just maybe, you'll prove the naysayers wrong and be an "overnight" success. Cruz Foam is a future MBA case study on how to dream BIG, work diligently for years and produce something that the world desperately needs. True biodegradable foam. We invested initially in Dec 2019 (and rounds thereafter). We were the only VC that bothered to go and see them at that point (and we came from Australia to Santa Cruz!). We are thrilled that other wonderful investors have joined the cause and backed this amazing company that is destined to live up to the cliche...and change the world! 🚀

The Australian Treasury has published the list of responses to the consultation on changing (increasing) the wholesale investor thresholds ( https://lnkd.in/g_ab96EB ). It has sparked a wave of criticism across the startup community, and rightly so. Like many others, we too have voiced our concerns through a formal submission. Interestingly, while Australia seems set on massively tightening its grip on who qualifies as a wholesale investor and threatening the whole startup ecosystem, the United States is charting a markedly different and more inclusive course. With the bipartisan backing, the U.S. is introducing the Equal Opportunity for All Investors Act of 2023 ( https://lnkd.in/g5bMiWXs ), signifying a move to democratise investment opportunities. This new legislation has been moving swiftly through the legislative process. It aims to lower the barriers to investing in private assets by introducing an accredited investor test. This test seeks to evaluate an investor's understanding of the nuances and risks associated with both private and public offerings, rather than using wealth as the primary yardstick for investment savvy. Representative Mike Flood eloquently summed up the ethos behind this shift, stating, "wealth should not be the sole determinant of investment know-how."
