"In fewer than 30 years, the world's population over age 60 will reach 2 Billion", said Roy Koren, CEO of SeniorMarket, in his opening remarks as MC of the second conference on Investments in Healthy Longevity, at UnBox.
 The conference was attended by Bar-Ilan researchers and entrepreneurship ecosystem partners, seeking tech solutions enhancing health in an age of longevity. 
The expert panel featured Prof. Haim Cohen, head of the Sagol Center for the Molecular Mechanisms of Aging at the Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences at Bar-Ilan; Omri Amirav-Drory, Ph.D., General Partner at NFX Bio and Founder & CEO of Renewal Bio, and Shomrat Shurtz, Senior Director- Business Development, at the Israeli Innovation Authority, who each contributed interesting insights from their respective areas of expertise and didn't ignore the elephant in the room - the US bank crisis. 
Shomrat Shurtz addressed the hightech crisis post the SVB bank shutdown: "Together with the Treasury, we are trying to understand the scope of the problem and explore how the country can help companies. Presumably, there will be a long term impact on the Israeli hi-tech sector. Israel's great advantage is that it knows how to fail brilliantly. Other countries learn from us how to fail and run to the next project, we're constantly in forward motion".  
Prof. Haim Cohen said: "Our sense as researchers is that there aren't sufficient funding sources for aging research, neither governmental nor private. Aging research relies on research funds and philanthropy. There is a need for long term vision and patience". Prof. Cohen mentioned four key areas of interest for investments in the biology of aging: metabolic diseases; removal of old cells from the body, incorporating Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and tissue renewal and rejuvenation.  
Omri Amirav-Drory, Ph.D, pointed out that we're used to living in a country whose population is growing rapidly. In many countries around the world, the population is decreasing and will continue to do so (China is shrinking from 1.4B to 650M over the next 30 years). Governments understand that each additional year added to the populations' healthspan is worth Trillions of dollars in health expenditure and added productivity of the population. "The technology we're building at Renewal can extend healthspan and will enable the production of eggs such that women can have children post-menopause." 
 Zohar Yinon, CEO of Bar-Ilan University referenced the national personalized health initiative - PSIFAS - launched on Purim at the university. It's a bank of hundreds of thousands of blood samples and medical data that will be made accessible to the scientific and clinical medical communities, startups and the health industry.

Age-tech entrepreneurs & investors, what a kickoff we had at UnBox, and it’s the perfect time for you to get involved in the action! 
Our three-session Age-Tech meetup series was created to bring Bar Ilan excellence in research together with industry leaders to create research-driven startups. 
Here’s a glimpse of the great meeting of minds at our first session:
Prof Haim Cohen, Head, Molecular Mechanisms of Aging Lab at Bar Ilan University’s Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences.
Prof. Cohen spoke of the dramatic extension in life expectancy (70% since 1900!) and entailed challenges: social (loneliness), family (5 generations), extended couple hood, economics and age-related health issues. Prof. Cohen cited a Harvard & Oxford economic study estimating $36T would be added to the global economy if we added one year of healthy aging to the population.

Roy highlighted Super Agers, who reach age 100, as an increasingly growing phenomenon. From a business perspective, healthy aging is a big blue ocean, full of entrepreneurship, research and investment opportunities. 
Prof. Tzipi Strauss, MD, Director of Neonatology at Sheba Medical Center spoke about the data and AI revolution which have significantly advanced longevity research. Prof. Strauss initiated and is launching the longevity center at Sheba – one of the first in the world within a public hospital. 
Idan Abukassis, Co-Founder & COO, GaitBetter, developer of an innovative cognitive-motor training tech, significantly reducing one of older age’s biggest risk factors: falling. Idan openly touched on the challenges of health-tech entrepreneurs vis-à-vis heavy regulation and penetrating markets outside Israel such as the US. 
Dr. Anat Ekka Zohar, Phd, Deputy Director and Head of Medical Division of Bayit Balev (Maccabi Healthcare Services Group) shared innovative practices they employ. She introduced their open data model, inviting researchers and entrepreneurs to use data collected at Bayit Balev to serve as infrastructure for developing excellent services and products for older adults.  
Prof. Eitan Okun, Head of the Paul Feder Laboratory for Research on Neurodegenerative diseases and researcher at the Gonda Brain Research Center at Bar Ilan University’s concluded" we can’t stop aging!" But research demonstrates several effective external interventions which can be employed to slow down the aging of our cells, including those in our brains: exercise, cutting down on food consumption, quality continuous sleep (which assists in removing toxins from brain cells) and delaying retirement

We haven't discovered the Fountain of Youth (yet :) but we're sure contestants in the scientific race to slow the aging process and preserve people's physical and cognitive abilities and improve quality of life well into old age.

Unboxing a Brand New Year!
And what a start! 

We toasted in the new Jewish year with Bar Ilan University's management, senior researchers, outstanding PhD students, partners from Sheba Medical Center, VCs, serial entrepreneurs, mentors and partners who have accompanied us from day one and share our commitment to research driven entrepreneurship. 

The cherries on top were the UnBoxers themselves, research-preneurs who shared their experiences founding companies over the past 3 years, devoted to realizing our shared vision of beneficial global impact.

We are very grateful to Bar-Ilan University Ilan University for being our home, for the support and shared mission of developing research driven entrepreneurship. 

We also thank our partners at ARC Innovation at Sheba Medical Center for the beautiful path we are carving out together.

Yesterday at the UnBox Ventures we had the pleasure & honor of hosting our UCSC partners who see eye to eye with us on the essence of science based entrepreneurship. Tiffany Wilson & Heath Naquin together with local rep Michael Piha, gave great tips to our UnBoxers, currently focusing on validation in the US medical market. 
Listening to this advice will serve our entrepreneurs (5 teams) well as they head to Philadelphia for UCSC global market access program, including golden networking opportunities with mentors, clients and medical organizations.
