Focused Energy is pioneering in two key areas where fusion spin-off technology is already having an impact:
 
▶️ 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠: We are developing a laser system that accelerates a neutron beam at 100 times the intensity of existing technologies. These neutrons, which can penetrate dense materials such as steel in concrete buildings and bridges, are being explored for civil engineering applications.
 
▶️ 𝐍𝐮𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠: We are working with the German government to build the first laser-driven neutron source for the inspection and safe storage of nuclear waste containers.

During the panel discussion, 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐮𝐬 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡. "Different components [e.g. lasers, targets, diagnostic systems, and both conventional and unconventional power plant construction] can be developed individually and in parallel, for example, in collaboration with industry." 

Germany, with its market leadership in optics, is well-positioned to drive these advances forward. ⚡️

The panel, which included experts such as Peter Schroth (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, Head of Department 714 "Fusion Research"), Milena Roveda (Gauss Fusion), Prof. Dr. Constantin Haefner (Fraunhofer ILT), and Sibylle Günter (Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics), was moderated by Hans-Martin Henning (Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE) and explored Germany's competencies in the field of #FusionEnergy.

Interesting read in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung about Bettina Stark-Watzinger's bold move to change laws that have been holding back our scientists. As someone deeply invested in the future of energy, I find this incredibly exciting.

▶️ Minister Stark-Watzinger is advocating for a comprehensive set of legislative changes aimed at giving more freedom to research and driving technological innovation in Germany. She rightly points out the urgent need for new technologies and innovative business models to boost productivity growth in our country.

One standout proposal is the rapid initiation of preparations for a dedicated fusion law. This could open huge opportunities for a clean, safe, and efficient #energy supply. 🔝 Additionally, she suggests reforming the carbon dioxide storage and transport law to test methods for capturing harmful climate gases – a crucial step for our planet's future.

Harnessing Energy from Laser Fusion: Our senior scientists, Debra Callahan, and Stefano Atzeni, are featured in the latest issue of Physics Today, discussing the commercialization of laser fusion technology. ⚡️

The article highlights the groundbreaking achievements at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's National Ignition Facility (NIF), where researchers demonstrated net energy gain for the first time in 2022, paving the way for future advances in inertial confinement fusion (ICF).

NIF's net gain milestone has ignited a push to generate commercial-scale fusion energy using the ICF approach. With the fundamental physics challenges overcome, public and private companies are now working on solving the technological challenges to harness inertial fusion for electricity production.

𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬: For the next twelve months, Focused Energy Inc. has received 20.4 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 (𝐌 𝐜-𝐡) 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 from the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU)). 🖥️⚡
 
Our winning proposal was one of 36 evaluated by a high-level review panel as part of the EuroHPC #RegularAccess call.
 
▶️ We intend to use the High Performance Computing (HPC) resources to research and optimize particularly complex physical aspects of our proton fast ignition approach. Exciting developments are underway at the former Biblis nuclear power plant of RWE: District Administrator Christian Engelhardt discussed the 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 with representatives from RWE Nuclear and Focused Energy. 

Together with the owners, RWE Nuclear, we recently signed a cooperation agreement to conduct a pilot project at the Biblis decommissioning facility. Over the next two years, RWE’s former emergency power supply building will be emptied and converted to house our laser-driven radiation sources (LDRS) research. ⚡️

#LDRS could revolutionize non-destructive material testing and nuclear decommissioning with its compact size, higher resolution, and greater penetration depth compared to existing imaging methods.
