FREITAG TESTS RENT-A-BAG SERVICE IN BERLIN

This Spring, FREITAG launches a rent-a-bag offering in Berlin, in a move to further service the needs of young conscious urbanites. After two decades that have seen the recycled tarpaulin bags handed from one generation to the next, FREITAG is challenging ideas around ownership through the exploration of a circular service. Via POOL, the Berlin-based fashion rental service, the Zurich brand manufacturer is offering its iconic, unique products for 9€ a month. Visitors to the brand’s first rental pop-up will be given the chance to swap their rented FREITAG bag for a different style at no extra cost: an extensive library of curated, circulating products. 

AN IMMERSIVE POP-UP

For 3 months, FREITAG’s Laboratory Of Progress (F.L.O.P.) and POOL have created a pop-up experience on Berlin’s Torstraße in a move to explore a service that promotes access instead of  ownership. Upon entering Torstraße 67 – the stand-alone structure distinct for its checkerboard facade – visitors will be met by a curtain of car seatbelts suspended high above from the raw blue ceiling. In a balance between the familiar and the unexpected, the endless sea of belts hold a curated selection of FREITAG one-off bags waiting to be leased by visitors. A brand heralded for its rigorous approach to repurposing materials, once the pop-up closes its doors, the seatbelts will be taken to the FREITAG headquarters to be manufactured into the next recycled, individual products. The installation illustrates a deliberate shift from the typical retail experience, while remaining true to FREITAG's stringent ethos of repurposing. The space, a building site mid-construction, embraces the beauty of imperfection, one of FREITAG’s design principles.

The Berlin-based fashion service POOL is powering FREITAG’s journey into the rental space. Since its establishment in 2020, POOL has been inviting Berliners to explore a new model of ownership. Under a monthly pricing model, members have access to a highly curated, constantly rotating, wardrobe of products.

Gallery Weekend is coming up in Berlin and we’re adding to the buzz in our gallery dense neighbourhood. The exhibition and performance is the first test activation of a tiny room within our new location. With its merely 10m2 we thought it would be clever to invite emerging artist Rafaella Braga who creates enormous large-scale works. Let’s see how that goes.

We’re moving to Große Hamburger Straße 42 in Mitte. 

We’re working hard to turn the old Gemüseladen into your new POOL and should be ready to welcome you back Wednesday next week!

After a ton of happy days on Besselstr, today is our last day here. It will be sad to say goodbye to this Kiez and this particular building where we have had 3(!) different addresses on our start-up journey. 

We want to give a solid shout-out to our dear landlord for being supportive through difficult covid times, and even joining as a POOL member himself. Also a big thanks to our neighbours at Forum Factory for always lending us everything from a hammer to wireless mics for our events. And of course to the sweetest team at Akkurat Cafe, what a contribution to the neighbourhood, thank you! And last but not least, to all of you who have made your way to this unusual location just to visit POOL. ❤️

But we’re moving. Those of you who know us well know that having a physical presence, being more than a click online,  a tap in an app, and being a meaningful part of everyday life for our community,  is important to us. And, since we opened our doors here in Kreuzberg, we've heard many of you say you wished we were located at a more frequently visited hood. That’s why we’re moving to Mitte. And not just Mitte, but to the soon to be sunny corner of Auguststraße / Große Hamburger Straße!

Our physical service will be closed from tomorrow until Wednesday, while we get your new favourite spot in order. We’re available for swaps as always via DM or hello@p-o-o-l.xyz.

As the pandemic loosened its grip at the beginning of 2022, we held talks, hosted brands, threw a few parties, took over the Highsnobiety HQ and the extended wardrobe kept growing. Our members and community are fundamental to each part of POOL and all we can say is thank you for an incredible 2022.
