Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa is an event focused on deep learning and artificial intelligence, held at the University of the Witwatersrand from July 09-12, 2024.

Deep Learning IndabaX

A Deep Learning IndabaX is a locally-organised Deep Learning Indaba conference that helps ensure that knowledge and capacity in machine learning are spread more widely across the African continent. As a community-driven off-shoot of the Deep Learning Indaba, the events are typically organised by students and young researchers passionate about the field and its growth. Since 2018, 39 IndabaX events have been organized in different countries across Africa, growing the community by over 2,000 attendees. Collaborating with IndabaX events across the continent, the upcoming event is the only one in South Africa, and the biggest with at least 200 attendees each year.

The aim of the conference is to provide a practical introduction to machine learning for beginners, to exchange scientific knowledge amongst researchers, and showcase cutting-edge applications from industry partners (these will be in parallel sessions). Furthermore, there will be a poster session to showcase student research, an online hackathon for country engagement, and an "unconference" session to promote an attendee-driven agenda.

Stoked to have come 3rd in the InstaDeep advanced machine learning hackathon at the Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa, where Noah De Nicola and I optimized an image segmentation algorithm for locust swarm detection!

The opening remarks by Benjamin Roseman, one of the founding fathers of Deep Learning Indaba, and Lynn Morris of University of the Witwatersrand have set the tone for an inspiring day. The keynote speech by Pelonomi Moiloa of Lelapa AI has been nothing short of amazing, leaving us all inspired and eager to dive deeper into the world of tech.

Last week, I attended the 7th annual Deep Learning Indaba𝕏 South Africa 2024, hosted at the University of the Witwatersrand. It was a privilege to once again serve as part of the organising team and be part of growing the Indaba𝕏 community. It was truly a privilege to work alongside such a talented and dedicated team.

One of the most gratifying aspects was the opportunity to engage with experts and peers in the field. I participated in some of the workshops including: ” Leveraging RAG to Improve LLM Generation" presented in collaboration with Discovery Limited and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The workshop on "AI for Health in Africa" workshop, organized by Sisonke Biotik &  @DSI_Africa which were all very relevant to my area of research. 

Among the many great speakers I had an opportunity to attend some several Keynotes including Lelapa AI’s very own Pelonomi Moiloa speaking on Language technology for Africa and Prof. Mpho Primus founder of Primus Technology Hub speaking on NLP for Africa: Trends and perspectives, exploring the intersection of linguistics, computer science and AI technologies and the potential for the African continent.
