The #SIIPSreport2024 is finally here! By AfricaNenda and partners. Join the ongoing report presentation and panel discussions in Accra and online now, for fresh insights on the State of Inclusive Instant Payment Systems in Africa. Here are some of the key highlights from the instant payments landscape in 2024: - Over the last year, the IPS landscape in Africa has evolved to include 28 domestic IPS and 3 regional IPS, bringing the total number of live and operating IPS to 31. - These cover 26 countries (where 20 are domestic and 6 are covered by a regional IIPS with domestic functionality). -Of the 31 systems that are now live, 14 are cross‑domain systems. That means they provide all‑to‑all interoperability. In addition, 7 of the IPS are bank IPS and 9 are mobile money IPS. The eNaira in Nigeria remains the only sovereign currency IPS in Africa. - Banks are the most common direct IPS participants, with fintech still represented mostly through indirect participation. The direct participation of fintechs is still limited as compared with MMOs. Currently, only 11 out of 31 systems have non‑bank PSPs that are not mobile network operator‑led MMOs. - The balance in the African IPS landscape has shifted since 2010 from bank‑based systems to mobile money systems to cross‑domain systems - Volumes and values are on the rise, at an annual average growth rate of 37% and 39%, respectively. But a lot of this scale remains on-us, with off-net transactions still catching up - it shows which countries have provider monopolies. For affordable end-user choice of payment provider, the #interoperability business models still require work. - Instant payment systems are progressing along the inclusivity spectrum, although we still have those that are yet to get to the basic inclusivity level.
