Discounters and Traditional Supermarkets Dominate UK Christmas Market

Discounter Aldi and Lidl, along with traditional heavyweights Sainsbury's and Tesco, performed well in the UK Christmas market. Sainsbury's saw a 9.3% year-on-year sales growth, pushing up its market share. Tesco's sales rose by 7.5% and its market share also increased. Kantar recorded Lidl's sales growth at 13.8% and Aldi's at just under a tenth. Additionally, Kantar noted a record $17.3 billion in supermarket sales in the UK over the four weeks to December 24, with an all-time high average household spending of around $600.
