NuScale and a Utah state government agency have terminated the Carbon Free Power Project (CFPP), the first small modular reactor (SMR) to enter commercial service in the United States. The project, set to begin generating electricity in 2029, was canceled due to insufficient paying subscribers. NuScale had developed the project in partnership with Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS) and Idaho National Laboratory. The cancellation is a setback for advanced nuclear developers but is not expected to significantly impact the advancement of SMRs.
