CERA researchers have successfully used an innovative gene therapy technique that could one day replace the need for regular eye injections for conditions including ‘wet’ age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. Their technique edits a person's RNA, which changes the genetic instructions that influence the way cells behave without permanently altering DNA. "We envision that RNA editing could become a viable alternative to invasive and costly eye injections that have become a fact of life for many people," says Head of Genetic Engineering Research Associate Professor Guei-Sheung (Rick) Liu. This weekend Heather Machin and Terry Couper from the Lions Eye Donation Service (LEDS) organised and presented at the Orthoptics Australia and Australian Ophthalmic Nurses Association Conferences that were held alongside the The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Adelaide Conference. LEDS is a multi-disciplined team of nurses, orthoptists, and medical scientists. Through team members like Terry and Heather, LEDS and CERA continue to support, engage and collaborate with the wider allied health care group to exchange knowledge and promote both eye care and eye banking.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Australian Ophthalmic Nurses Association National Conference at the The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Congress in Adelaide on the weekend. Congratulations to Assocaite Professor Raymond Wong on winning the recent TRAM Air Pitch Showcase Competition! Through his startup Mirugen , Associate Professor Wong and his team are aiming to develop a gene therapy able to regenerate cells lost in the retina. Their work has the potential to restore sight for people living with conditions like retinitis pigmentosa, age-related macular degeneration, and Stargardt disease. They have been supported towards this goal by Translating Research at Melbourne through the 2024 TRAM Air program - accelerating them towards commercialisation success. We're deeply grateful to the TRAM Air team for the opportunity, support and recognition of Mirugen's ambitious work.
