🔬 Exciting profile on Associate Professor Holly Chinnery! 🔬 We are thrilled to share that Associate Professor Holly Chinnery, Inaugural Ian Constable Research Fellow at the Lions Eye Institute and The University of Western Australia, has been profiled by Bench Side Story for her pioneering work in corneal and ocular surface immunology. 👁️✨ Professor Chinnery and her research team have been at the forefront of ocular research, focusing on the immune system’s role in eye health. With over 15 years of experience, her work has led to groundbreaking discoveries in corneal immunology, including the first-ever visualisation of immune cells in the healthy human cornea using Functional In Vivo Confocal Microscopy (Fun-IVCM). 🧬 This breakthrough, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and in Nature Reviews Immunology, challenges long-standing beliefs and has the potential to reshape how we think about eye health and inflammation. 🌟Advancing our understanding of diabetic retinopathy 🌟 This October, Professor Chandra Balaratnasingam had the incredible opportunity to present at the renowned University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center , one of the largest diabetes research centres in the USA and consistently ranked among the top 10 eye hospitals! 🏥✨ During his visit, Professor Balaratnasingam engaged with clinicians and directors of various research programs, sharing insights on our cutting-edge research on diabetic retina disease at the Lions Eye Institute. The depth of research at Kellogg truly impressed him, and he was thrilled to receive high praise for our complex diabetic research initiatives including our key program of work through the Perron Paediatric Retinopathy Initiative! 🤝 This collaboration with the Kellogg Eye Center opens doors for joint research opportunities, including scientist exchanges and grant applications. 🙌 Clinical Assistant Professor Julie Rosenthal et al recently published a viewpoint paper in JAMA Ophthalmology highlighting alarming rates of diabetic retinopathy in youth. Her summary from the SEARCH and TODAY studies shows that diabetic retinopathy is more prevalent than previously thought, with nearly 55 per cent of youth-onset type 2 diabetes patients affected after just 12 years of diabetes. Refugees like Ma face high rates of vision loss, often from treatable eye conditions. On arrival in Perth, they, along with asylum seekers and Indigenous Australians, encounter unique challenges in accessing public eye care, such as long wait times, language barriers, financial and transport issues. The Lions InReach Vision (LIV) program, established in 2022 and led by Associate Professor Hessom Razavi, was created to break down these barriers. LIV provides a more accessible way for refugees, asylum seekers, and Indigenous Australians to receive both optometry and ophthalmology care, improving their overall eye health. 🌟 Reflecting on an inspiring lecture with Professor Camiel Boon 🌟 On Thursday 17 October, we had the privilege of hosting Professor Camiel Boon for the Lions Eye Institute's Miocevich Lecture, and what a remarkable experience it was! His engaging presentation shed light on the latest technological advances and medical innovations that are driving us closer to finding a cure for rare diseases like retinitis pigmentosa. Professor Boon emphasised the complexities of gene therapy and of measuring if such therapy is effective in clinical trials. In particular, he showed some of his work on how visual field testing could show improvements due to treatments where visual acuity cannot. Our own Professors Allison McKendrick and Andrew Turpin are developing and testing new methods of field testing at the Lions Eye Institute, that if successful will lead to faster clinical trials for many potential treatments of visual disorders including gene therapy. Today is the last interview in the Curtin Radio WA Women’s Hall of Fame series for 2024, and joining Jenny Seaton for a chat will be Health category inductee, Emeritus Professor Elizabeth Rakoczy . Elizabeth is a Hungarian-born molecular biologist and an internationally recognised scientist. She founded the Department of Molecular Ophthalmology at the Lions Eye Institute and was the first in Australia to apply molecular techniques to investigate eye diseases. Prof. Rakoczy is from the generation of women who had to be trailblazers in their scientific field to make it into senior positions, but that never stopped her.
