Lightning Strike and Emergency Landing: Aeroflot Flight 1492 Aeroflot Flight 1492, a domestic passenger flight from Moscow to Murmansk, Russia, experienced a catastrophic event on May 5, 2019. The Sukhoi Superjet 100, registered as RA-89098, encountered a severe in-flight emergency leading to a disastrous landing at Sheremetyevo International Airport, Moscow, resulting in significant loss of life and aircraft damage. The aircraft, delivered to Aeroflot in September 2017, had logged 2,710 flight hours and 1,658 cycles. It was equipped with 87 seats - 12 in business class and 75 in economy. On the day of the accident, the flight carried 73 passengers and 5 crew members. During its ascent, the aircraft was struck by lightning, causing a critical electrical failure. This led to a loss of primary radio and autopilot functions, forcing the aircraft into a degraded DIRECT flight control mode. The captain took manual control and declared an emergency. Despite maintaining operational secondary radio, the crew faced challenges in communication and navigation. The aircraft, overweight by 1.6 tonnes for a safe landing, was aligned for an emergency landing at Sheremetyevo. Complicated by a significant crosswind and increased landing speed, the approach was unstable. The aircraft touched down hard, causing the landing gear to collapse, spilling fuel, and igniting a fire. The evacuation was initiated through the front passenger doors, but the retrieval of hand luggage by some passengers potentially impeded the process. Despite these efforts, 41 occupants, including one flight attendant, perished in the accident. The investigation, led by the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC), involved multiple agencies. Preliminary findings indicated several key factors: lightning strike, electrical failure, manual flight control challenges, and the aircraft's overweight condition during landing. The IAC’s interim report highlighted issues with the aircraft’s landing gear design and the crew's response to the emergency. The aftermath saw criminal proceedings against the captain and widespread scrutiny of the Sukhoi Superjet 100’s safety and operational reliability. Aeroflot, along with other operators, faced public pressure and operational disruptions. However, the Ministry of Transport of Russia did not ground the SSJ100 fleet, citing no clear evidence of design flaws.
