Step 1: Calculating land-use change emissions When an area is converted from forest or peatland to plantation, there is typically a resulting drop in carbon storage, which is reported as biogenic emissions from land-use change. These emissions are calculated by quantifying negative changes in the above-ground biomass, below-ground biomass, dead organic matter and soil organic carbon within farm boundaries over a 20-year period. These emissions can be reported with a linear discount or equal distribution over a 20-year period. 🤓Methodology Monday’s: how do we assess and calculate the potential economic gains for farmers? Calculating the opportunity cost of protecting shade cover involves assessing the potential economic gains that could be realized with reduced shade cover, and involves the following steps: A. The current income of farmers in the project scope is calculated as follows: income = farm size x yield x farm-gate price - cost of production + off-farm income. B. The potential income with reduced shade cover (and often, increased yields) is calculated using the same formula, based on the available yield data in the supply chain. C. The difference between A (current income) and B (potential income) is extrapolated over a 20-year period. A discount rate is applied to future benefits and costs to account for the time-value of money. D. The carbon impact of the reduction in shade is calculated, by comparing real-world farms along a gradient of increasing management activities and reduced shade cover. E. The opportunity cost of carbon, and therefore the minimum price level for results-based payments, is calculated as C / D.
