Challis & Company is honoured to be working with the Message Stick Foundation (MSF) to appoint new non-executive directors (NEDs). MSF is a national not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to empowering First Nations youth. Its goal is to break the cycle of disadvantage and help the next generation of First Nations youth build their lives and claim their hopes for their future. MSF will create and operate purpose built First Nations youth centres in urban, regional and isolated areas across Australia, where youth can access innovative services, resources and culturally informed programs that will guide them towards a positive pathway. The first centre is scheduled to open in mid-2025 in the ACT with a holistic “one-stop shop” youth centre. This centre will serve as a prototype with the aim to stress-test outcomes and economic impacts before scaling nationally. Each youth centre will be supported by corporate partners under long-term values-led contracts, providing stability and sustained impact. The new NEDs may have: (a) served on the board of another well-regarded organisation in the not-for-profit or commercial sectors, or (b) substantial experience interfacing with a board, say, from having reported to a board. Consistent with MSF’s Constitution, most NEDs will be First Nations. Non-Indigenous candidates will demonstrate a track-record in working with First Nations communities. Each new NED is likely to come from one or more of the following backgrounds: (a) human services senior management or delivery, particularly with youth and First Nations communities; (b) First Nations community, culture, social policy and enterprise; (c) property and facilities management, including project management skills; (d) start-up environments, with experience formulating and executing on business plans; (e) corporate senior leadership, including responsibilities for people management; (f) working for or interacting with Commonwealth, state or local governments, ideally in complex matters across multiple geographies; (g) marketing, including experience building a brand; (h) legal and regulatory, relevant to MSF’s activities, or (i) philanthropic fundraising. The new NEDs may be based anywhere in Australia, with a preference for those on the East Coast. It would be ideal if one of the First Nations NEDs is based in the ACT. The NED positions are pro bono. We were first engaged by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts in 2016 to support the independent Nomination Panel that led to the appointment of Dr Hass Dellal AO as Chairperson, George Savvides AM as Non-Executive Director ('NED') (subsequently appointed as Chairperson), as well as Georgie Somerset AM as a NED of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) . Over the last eight years, we’ve supported the appointment of 15 NEDs/Chairs to our public broadcasters. We’re delighted to have been reappointed to work with the Department and independent Nomination Panel over the next two years on this SBS Chairperson and other ABC and SBS NED appointments.
