Headway is a mental healthcare system that helps users have access to affordable healthcare. It operates a virtual network of therapists that accept insurance and provide video or in-person sessions booked completely online. Headway is building a new mental healthcare system that everyone can access making it easy for therapists to accept insurance and scale their practice. 

1 in 4 people in the US have a treatable mental health condition, but the vast majority do not get the care they need. The primary reason is cost: the majority of therapists do not accept insurance, meaning paying for therapy is prohibitively expensive for prospective patients. This is where we got our start – Headway has built the first software-enabled network of therapists who accept health insurance, making it easy for therapists to grow their practices, and possible for patients to find quality care they can afford. 

Headway was founded in 2019 and are now powering 500,000+ appointments per month. To scale its vision, Headway has raised over $225+ million in funding from a16z (Andreessen Horowitz), Thrive, Accel, and GV (formerly Google Ventures), Spark Capital, Health Care Service Corporation. We recently completed our Series C funding in October 2023 receiving $125 million with a valuation of $1 billion.

To help aid Headway’s national expansion efforts, the company is building new technology to support mental health providers licensed in multiple states who can provide care across state lines. Headway works with in-person and virtual providers.

Ghost networks are a persistent problem in mental health care. Headway exists to fix this systemwide challenge at its core. 

We believe that making it easy for providers to actively practice in-network is critically important. By enabling providers to make this choice, health plans can have active networks and gather data that helps members get care.

We’re incredibly excited to share that we’ve closed a $125 million Series C fundraising round. The round was led by our new investor, Spark Capital, and supported by existing investors Accel, Thrive Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz. We’ve also welcomed new strategic investors, which were led by Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC).

It’s been well documented that the US is facing a growing mental health crisis. Yet, 43% of people who need care don’t receive it. Many suggest this is due to increasing demand for therapy and stalling supply of therapists. 

We see it differently at Headway. 

We believe that the net supply of providers isn't the core issue —  rather, it’s access to them. Most therapists and psychiatrists don’t actively accept insurance because historically, it’s been too burdensome.

In 2019, Headway set out to build a new mental health care system that everyone can access. We did this by supporting and enabling the heroes of our mental health crisis – the providers – through technology that makes it easy to take insurance and run a private practice. 

Four years later, Headway is the largest mental health provider group in the country, with more than 26,000 therapists, psychiatrists, and nurse practitioners who deliver in-person and virtual care to hundreds of thousands of patients. And we’re only getting started.

Taking on a challenge like bettering the mental healthcare system is ambitious. We’re lucky to have some of the most incredible providers and partners with us every step of the way.
