THIS HELICOPTER COMPONENT WAS IN USE FOR 100 YEARS 22 BILION WERE SPENT FOR ITS DEVELOPING THROW 1936-2024 AND NOW IT WILL BECOME ABSOLETE Yes , you read it right . It is helicopter main gearbox , for which you will fail to found manufacturer (for 5 seats and bigger models) . All main helicopter manufacturers produce it in house , AIRBUS bought ZF Luftfahrttechnik only for that purpose . That is sophisticated complex and very expensive to produce component and legacy industry relay on this component as core of their production capabilities . But , what will happen next ? As the electric cars powered by electric motors eliminated the needs of gear box , same story will happen in the rotorcraft industry. The next generation rotorcrafts won't need gearboxes any more and so will save a lot of resources in production . Compare electric motor and gas motor with the gearbox . The second option contain thousands of parts and each of them can fail in the air , gearbox malfunction cause about 10% of helicopter crashes . All powertrain functions as below in THE NEXT GEN ROTORAFTS will be managed without complex and expensive main gear box . Recent heli tech gear box manage : 1. power Transmission to the Main Rotor. The main rotor is the primary system that provides lift and allows the helicopter to hover, ascend, and descend. The main gearbox reduces the high rotational speed of the engine to a suitable lower speed for the main rotor, enabling it to operate efficiently and safely. 2. power Transmission to the Tail Rotor. In helicopters with a tail rotor, the gearbox also directs power to the tail rotor. The tail rotor counteracts the torque generated by the main rotor, stabilizing the helicopter and preventing it from spinning uncontrollably. The gearbox adjusts the speed of the tail rotor to balance torque and maintain directional control. 3. speed Reduction. Helicopter engines, especially turbine engines, typically operate at very high RPMs (rotations per minute). The main gearbox serves as a speed reducer, converting these high RPMs to the much lower speed required for the main rotor and tail rotor. This ensures safe rotor speeds and optimal flight performance. 4. distribution of Power to Other Systems. The main gearbox may also distribute power to auxiliary systems such as the helicopter's hydraulic pumps, electrical generators, and cooling systems. These secondary functions are essential for the helicopter’s overall operation, providing power to onboard electronics and other subsystems. 5. ensuring Correct Rotor RPM. Maintaining the correct rotor RPM is crucial for safe flight. If the rotor spins too slowly, the helicopter cannot generate enough lift. If it spins too fast, it can cause structural damage. The gearbox plays a key role in regulating rotor speed to the precise range needed for safe operation under different flight conditions.
