What do real estate owners operators need to know about the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's new climate disclosure rules?

Fifth Wall Head of Sustainability Heather McGeory spoke with Commercial Observer to give her point of view: "the most significant thing we can see about the SEC ruling is that it happened," despite excluding Scope 3 emissions from the reporting requirements.

Heather says that having formalized policy gives clarity on how the industry needs to move forward and make decisions: "you're going to activate and try to reduce those emissions, because you want to deliver to your shareholders and demonstrate that you’re making change.”

In the case of publicly traded REITs, their net zero transition plans will be public in less than two years: "If you don't already have one, now will be a good time to develop one that demonstrates your climate goals, your energy transition plan, and your operational approach to achieving those goals," advises Heather.
