Balancing Academics and Sports To give you a perspective, we have trained more than 1000 athletes in the last 6 years but this one needs to be mentioned because this one is heartbreaking. An 11-year-old boy started coaching with us in 2020. Sport wasn't just a hobby; it was a burning passion. He progressed across levels, month after month, year after year. For perspective - we have 7 levels of training - from Beginners to Advanced Pro. Starting at the 3rd level, he soon surpassed L-4, L-5 and L-6 in record speed. Our Strength and Conditioning sessions start at 5.15 am in the morning, never saw him reach after 5 (he was always warmed up waiting for the coach) Committed to his practice, he finally entered the Advanced Pro level. The pressure to excel was intense. And this pressure came when he turned 15, which means Class X boards also came knocking. The need to excel academically as well collided head-on with his rigorous training schedule. The pressure mounted on both sides. Excelling in sport does take time but boards come only once. Faced with an impossible choice during his crucial board exam year, the young man made a difficult decision. Academics came first. Need to take break from the sport. And this is not an isolated case. When we question our tally at the olympics or India losing the world cup final after a stupendous run, these are the real discussions that need to happen - Can schools offer more support for students juggling sport with high-pressure exam years? What should sports academies like ours do when such athletes are becoming formidable but are facing the education system’s wrath P.S. the boy has been spotted again a few times in the last one week (after a month’s break). Maybe he is trying a balancing act. Our fingers remain crossed. Sai Praneeth. He’s an Arjuna Awardee and a bronze medallist at the 2019 BWF Badminton Championships. And there many sporting champs who, like him, are now exploring what to do next. It takes a village to raise a child. But every now and then, even the village ‘panchayat’ deserves a break. So Flow Sports organised some time off for our students parents and coaches. We went off the badminton courts and on to the cricket pitch. One team lost and another won. But the beauty of recreational sport is, no one cares that much. You could drop 15 catches, get out first ball, bowl 10-ball overs, but you’ll still be leaving with an ear-to-ear grin. As all of us did post the session. Here’s to more such matches. Put it on pause. Whatever you are doing. Put. It. On. Pause. Because IIT Madras made a momentous move. And we need to pause and applaud their decision. What is this decision? They are the first ever IIT to introduce 2 seats under a Sports Quota! One is for men, and the other one is for women. What does this mean? Students trying to get into IIT will now focus on sports along with their education. And we couldn’t be happier. Why? Sports, it teaches you life. From how to deal with failure, to collaborating in a team. Plus it makes you fitter, both mentally and physically. An era of sports being taken seriously in India is beginning. And we want to pause and applaud the people who finally made this happen. We Hope more IITs, NITs, Universities, B Schools follow suit and soon. Offices are great for work, horrible for the body. Back aches, muscle pain, obesity, a lot of mid-life medical issues are blamed on the lethargic office lifestyle. While we can’t do away with the office, we can evolve it. What if all of us took our first step towards the same by putting a Body Composition Analysis machine in the office. Normally, these machines are only available in high-end gyms. But now, none of us need to pay an expensive gym fee just to track our bodies. Now, we can track fat percentage, water levels, visceral fat (which is highly deadly), muscle rates daily and manage our diets / workouts accordingly. This not only informs, but also motivates us to stay healthy. Many companies give free gym memberships. But at Flow Sports, fitness is not losing weight. Fitness is taking informed decisions that positively impact all of our lives. Put a BCA machine in the office. Starting ones cost about 10k-15k; and they are accurate enough to give you a good ballpark of where your body is at. Thus helping avoid a lot of medical issues your team faces. As a wise man said - a team that workouts properly, works out properly. This is a suggestion for all the offices trying to help employees manage work-related stress with fancy pool tables and cool gaming consoles. Stop. No, not because it costs a lot of money. Not because it affects employee productivity. Honestly, fancy pool tables & cool gaming consoles & lots of other things offices do to make employees feel at home seem like legitimate efforts. But stop, or at least - Pause, please. Just because it is not that much fun, neither is it healthy. You know what you need for fun? A bit of rope, some chalk, some cones and lastly, balls. Look at how much fun these kids are having. We can guarantee you, people of all ages will have the same level of fun. Because games like Tug of War & Ice Hockey are good dopamine. Unlike sedentary recreations, they bring out the child inside & leave us feeling the ‘good kind of tired’. Can someone think of better ways to get good dopamine in the office? A kid who excels in academics gets scholarships from all over the world. That is great. It feels right. But what about the champs with potential to bring in sporting trophies for the country? We get it. Education is important. AND SO IS SPORTS. Sporting as a dream that is difficult to fund. Even Badminton takes approx. 40k a month out of a parent’s pocket. So we thought, for kids willing to pick up a racquet, why not pick up the cheque? That is when we launched the Flow Sports Sponsorship Badminton Tournament. Meant to find the sporting scholars of India. The winner and the runner-up won sponsorships worth INR 3,30,000 & INR 2,50,000 respectively. We would request you to share this with your friends. Especially the ones working in big companies. Tell them the S in CSR can also stand for sport. And request them to use their CSR funds to help fill India’s trophy cabinets.
