💔 Our country is in the midst of a gun violence epidemic, affecting tens of thousands of Americans every year. One of the many devastating effects of gun violence is its impact on small businesses, including restaurants. Increases in gun violence within a community has been shown to cause local businesses to shutter and reduce jobs, which can harm a community's long-term economic well-being: 📊 A recent study conducted in Washington, DC found that a sudden increase in gun violence reduced the growth of local businesses by up to 7.5%. 📉 Another study in Minneapolis found that each additional gun homicide in a census tract in a given year was associated with 80 fewer jobs the next year. 🍉 🫑 How did we divert over 800 pounds of food waste away from landfills from one restaurant? Our inKind Sustainability Team worked with Ember Kitchen in Austin, TX on a pilot initiative to help address food waste. During the 3-month pilot period, we successfully diverted over 800 pounds of food waste away from landfills to animal donations. 👏 inKind used a multi-tiered approach to understand how much food is being wasted by the restaurant, help the restaurant adjust purchasing behavior, and divert any wasted food away from landfills.
