Inclusive education remains one of the biggest challenges for teachers, especially newly qualified teachers. A recent study by ACER revealed common barriers that eight teachers encountered when starting their profession: ➡️ 1) Inclusive education terminology: A lack of strong, professional language and knowledge. ➡️ 2) Practical skills: Insufficient training in evidence-based instructional and assessment strategies. ➡️ 3) Hands-on experience: Limited opportunities to work with individuals with disabilities in inclusive settings. These findings highlight potentially important gaps in teacher preparation programs. In the study, the following recommendations are offered on how to fill them: ➡️ 1) Ensure that teachers graduate with a solid, research-based understanding of inclusive education terminology and concepts, ➡️ 2) Teaching programs should include mandatory inclusive education courses that focus on practical, evidence-based practices. ➡️ 3) These courses must be paired with professional placement opportunities that provide experience working with individuals with disabilities. As AI advances at breakneck speed, we're hearing more about the importance of adopting a "human-in-the-loop" approach, where people rigorously validate and refine the work that AI tools produce. What might this human-in-the-loop approach look like for educators who use AI tools to create items/questions for their tests? These are a few key validation tasks they'll need to complete for each AI-created question: - Check that the question accurately assesses the learning objective - Ensure the question is clearly stated, without ambiguity - Ensure the language is appropriate for the student cohort - Ensure the question format is accessible, and familiar if appropriate - Confirm the marking criteria for the question - Consider whether each and every question fits into the broader objectives of the test - Check for possible cultural or gender biases - Last but not least...check that the answer is correct! Of course, these tasks (and more) are also necessary for human-created questions, but they're especially important when the questions are created by AI. It has the potential to massively speed up your question creation process, providing near-instant frameworks for questions, but there's still plenty of human-in-the-loop validation and refinement to get the questions test-ready. It wasn’t too long ago that seating students in an exam hall with nothing but paper and pen was considered the only way to run an assessment. But with the evolution of quality online assessment tools, things have changed for the better, with many younger students preferring them. This preference can be narrowed down to a few common reasons: 1. They're skilled at using digital technology, and often find online tests more engaging. 2. Online tests include features like flagging, word counts, time counters...all very useful and absent from paper-based tests. 3. They may be adapted to their unique accessibility needs - like using a certain colour palette appropriate for colour blindness. 4. In certain types of tests, the results can be instant. 5. They can complete certain tests from home at the time of their choosing. This is a big one! We expect to see more organisations and institutions embracing online tests in future. It's a slow and steady evolution for the education industry.
