9 in 10 people in the US don’t get enough fruits and veggies. Our founder, Tomás Froes , used to be one of them. Back in 2014, Tomás found himself in a fruit and veggie emergency. He was diagnosed with acute gastritis. The doctor prescribed pills, that he would have to take for the rest of his life from that day on. But Tomás had a different idea. Inspired by the fresh produce grown on his grandmother’s farm, he shifted to a diet of at least five servings of fruit and vegetables each day, no dairy and little-to-no meat. And everything changed — he felt better. But his busy work-life schedule was getting in the way of this new routine. "I kept winding up with rotten fruits and vegetables in my backpack. I added fruit juices to my 5-a-day to simplify things," he says, "but cold-press juices were expensive and didn’t last long either, and they didn’t offer the fruit’s full nutrition." It turns out, Tomás wasn’t alone in this problem. Half of the fruit and veg produced each year is left to waste. Working with nutritionists, he discovered that freeze-drying fresh produce captures their nutrients in a shelf stable form. And from this discovery, the first freeze-dried instant smoothie was born.
