Why sugary beverages like soda are leading to weight gain

Richard Johnson, MD, author of “Nature Wants Us To Be Fat,” explains.

The major source of fructose we get is not from the occasional fruit; it’s from the huge amount of added sugars we’re eating.

The average person in the United States consumes about 150 pounds of sugar per year.

Roughly about 15% of our diet comes from added sugars.

A killer source: Sugary beverages are mostly just sucrose, table sugar, or high-fructose corn syrup, along with water. You can get a lot of sugar and calories from soft drinks.

It’s been known for decades that sugary beverages are a dramatic risk factor for obesity.

Reducing carb intake can help promote more stable blood glucose levels and, in turn, support metabolic health.

However, not all carbs are equal. The body processes sugars, sugar alcohols, starches, and fibers differently, meaning each type of carb affects blood sugar differently.

Calculating net carbs is one tactic to better understand how a specific food may affect your blood glucose. While you may have heard the term “net carbs” or seen it on packaged foods, you may not know what it means or how to use this number to your advantage.

First, it’s important to note that “net carbs” is not a clinical or FDA-sanctioned definition. Anytime you see “net carbs” (or “impact carbs” or “digestible carbs”) on a food package, it’s marketing language invented by the food industry, primarily to appeal to low-carb and keto dieters. But the number you see on a food label could be inaccurate, simply because the FDA doesn’t use net carbs as a metric.

To calculate net carbs, you subtract the grams of fiber, erythritol, and allulose, and half the grams of other sugar alcohols (e.g. xylitol) from the total carb content. For whole or minimally processed foods without these added sweeteners, you’d simply subtract the fiber from the total carb content.

Instead of debating the philosophy of one way of eating over another or worrying about whether specific foods are “good” or “bad,” ask these questions about your diet.

1. Is it rich in nutrients?
2. Is it minimally processed?
3. Is it low in sugar?

Knowing the benefits and pitfalls of various types of diets can help you incorporate strategies for aiding metabolic health, no matter which diet philosophy you follow.

How to eat to reduce inflammation in the body. 

Recently Levels advisor Dr. Casey Means was a guest on the PLANTSTRONG podcast with Rip Esselstyn to share how food is medicine.

🩺 Dr. Means went from being an ear, nose, and throat doctor to being a food-is-medicine evangelist.

🥅 Her goal is to help turn the tide away from ultra-processed foods to whole foods that nourish the body and help prevent illness and deadly chronic diseases.

🍽️ “We eat almost 70 metric tons of food in our lifetime,” Dr. Means says, “and you can imagine if 70% are these artificial, totally altered substances that our bodies never really evolved to eat, of course that’s going to be a huge threat signal for the body.”

🥦 She adds, “So how do we get back to the foods our body is expecting, that it wants, that allow it to be in a safer situation and ultimately reduce some of that chronic inflammation that’s leading to not only ear, nose, and throat issues but to so many other chronic diseases  killing Americans today?”

✅ The answer: “If we can fix our diet, we reduce that threat signal in the body,” she says. Here are some basic tips.

- Avoid ultra-processed foods as much as possible.
- Reduce reliance on refined carbohydrates as much as possible.
- Shop for whole foods as much as possible.
- Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables for optimal fiber and micronutrient intake.
- Eat optimal amounts of healthy fats and protein.
- Pair carbohydrates with fats, protein, and fiber to slow how quickly glucose enters the bloodstream.
- Remember that the same foods can affect people differently.
- Tracking glucose response with a continuous glucose monitor can help you learn how different foods affect your body and which foods support your metabolic health rather than degrade it.
