More than ever, we must evolve how we think and work to increase speed and success in progressing potential therapies from concept to clinic. But what are the key challenges in evolving R&D models and how can we overcome them? At the #LongwoodHealthcareLeaders Fall 2023 Harvard Conference, I participated in a panel focusing on R&D transformation, exploring how we can discover novel therapeutic targets and get them to patients faster. My top takeaways were:
1.      Scaling change and making it stick depends on thinking beyond cost and speed to ensure changes are sustainable and empowering for teams: It takes time and effort to reframe mindsets and behaviors. New models and structures must be designed to accelerate innovation, maximize the skills of our talent in the right place at the right time and enhance cross-collaboration. 
2.      Digital transformation should sit at the core of any R&D strategy: Smart use of AI and human genomics data will increase our speed and probability of success in drug discovery and development and get new therapies to patients faster. At Astellas, we aim to build the best possible relationship between people and digital technology to achieve what has been unattainable until now.
3.      Partnering across the innovation community and with regulators will always be critical to our success: New modalities pose several complex challenges that can’t be navigated alone. We must collaborate across our communities, including industry, academia, and regulators, to break these challenges down and solve them quickly. 
What got us to where we are today won’t be enough to deliver the innovations of tomorrow. By evolving our R&D approach, we can collectively navigate the fast-moving healthcare landscape and transform the lives of patients. #ScienceFirstForPatients #Changingtomorrow
