⛵️ North West Passage Expedition - Week 10 update ⛵️

Since our last highlight, Keith Tuffley and his crew have been busy taking eDNA samples from water in some of the Arctic's most remote locations to map its unique ecosystems and wildlife.⛵️

Where are they now? 🌍 After sailing through Nuuk, Disko Bay, Ilulissat and the UNESCO-listed ‘Ilulissat Icefjord’, their final Greenland stop was Upernavik. Now in Canada, they’re navigating the challenging Arctic Archipelago.

Armed with NatureMetrics eDNA kits, the team is filling critical biodiversity data gaps across the Arctic. By sampling waters for environmental DNA, they're detecting traces of wildlife that may not be visible at the surface, revealing a hidden world of species diversity beneath the icy waters.

🔬 9,000 reasons to be excited about eDNA and AI in national biodiversity monitoring

Scotland is committed to become nature positive by 2030 and restoring biodiversity by 2045.

Through NatureMetrics' collaboration with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), NatureScot, and the Scottish Government's Marine Directorate over 9,000 species have been detected across Scotlands' marine lochs, freshwater lochs, woodlands, and peatlands.

This breakthrough highlights the power of combining eDNA with cutting-edge machine learning for national-scale ecological monitoring.

Key findings:

- Identified 9,000 different species, including many threatened, invasive, and indicator species crucial for conservation

- Outperformed conventional surveys in characterising entire ecosystems

- Developed AI models to classify habitat conditions and track restoration progress

🗓️ It’s International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

Observed every year on 9 August, this day is dedicated to promoting indigenous peoples' rights and celebrating indigenous communities. According to the UN, Indigenous Peoples' territories encompass 28% of the surface of the globe and contain 11% of the world’s forests. 🌍🌳

They are guardians of most of the world’s remaining biodiversity. Here are some examples of the crucial work these communities are doing across the globe:

💧 Māori-led river restoration in New Zealand:

The Whanganui River, which has been granted legal personhood, is being restored through a partnership between the New Zealand government and local Māori tribes. This involves replanting native vegetation, improving water quality, and integrating Māori cultural values into river management.

🐾 Sámi reindeer herding in Scandinavia:

The Sámi people's traditional reindeer herding practices in Norway, Sweden, and Finland help maintain Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems. Their rotational grazing methods prevent overgrazing and promote biodiversity in these sensitive northern landscapes.

🍃Khasi people's sacred groves in India:

The Khasi indigenous people in Meghalaya, India, maintain sacred forest groves as part of their cultural and religious practices. These protected areas serve as important biodiversity hotspots and help conserve rare plant species.

➡️ At NatureMetrics, we believe conservation and biodiversity monitoring are crucial to ensuring the protection of indigenous lands. Working hand in hand with local communities, learning from them and integrating their traditional knowledge of ecosystems is an integral part of our monitoring efforts.

In our recent work with the Inuit communities in Labrador, we validated what Inuit traditional knowledge had long suggested with NatureMetrics eDNA technology. Working with the NunatuKavut Community Council, we scientifically demonstrated that striped bass are expanding their range in the communities’ waters.

This journey teaches us that the future of biodiversity monitoring lies not in choosing between traditional and modern approaches, but in bringing them together in harmony. 🤝

🔍 Product Spotlight: Restoration Tracker

Alongside fantastic feedback, we’ve received lots of questions about our Restoration Tracker! Let's explore one of its most innovative features: base metrics.

The tracker uses two types of base metrics to provide a comprehensive view of ecosystem health:
1️⃣ Species Scores: these indicate how similar the species in your restoration site are to those in the reference site
2️⃣ Function Scores: these show how similar the ecological functions of the species are to those at the reference site

Why should we look at these data points?

By focusing on both species composition and ecological functions, the Restoration Tracker provides a nuanced understanding of ecosystem recovery. It's not just about matching the species, but about restoring the ecosystem's functionality.

How does that work in real life?

In a recent forest restoration project, we found that while species were recovering well (high Species Score), the Function Score lagged behind. This insight allowed the project managers to adjust their strategies, focusing on introducing species that would restore key ecological functions.

These frameworks provide a structured approach for companies to report on their interactions with nature, including biodiversity, ecosystem services, and climate-related risks. 🌍

➡️ Biodiversity risk assessments: for example, proximity of locations to biodiversity-sensitive areas
➡️ Impact drivers (or pressures): metrics that assess the causes of nature loss
➡️ State of nature: metrics that assess the current state of nature
