63% of marketing executives identified the creation of new content forms as their most significant AI-related goal, according to our survey commissioned by The Wall Street Journal. How ready is a B2B CMO to sit on a board? 

It depends. 

The CMO Board-Readiness Maturity Curve, created in partnership with Transmission, illustrates the current level of board-readiness among the 320 B2B CMOs we surveyed. 

Through a series of self-assessment questions, each CMO was evaluated across the framework’s key skills and capabilities and then given an accumulated board-readiness score. The scores were then grouped into four levels of maturity. Here’s what we found: 

📊Early Starters: The 2% that are motivated with board potential but lack experience and exposure.
📊Establishing: The 54% that are attending meetings and developing strong CEO relationships, but lack other board-critical skills.
📊Developing: The 42% that have strong CEO/CFO relationships but need better GTM collaboration and T-shaped skills.
📊Advanced: The 2% that are mastering board skills but need to expand their personal network to be considered for a board member role.
