We got the chance to catch up with them and gain some insights on what it’s like to build a gigafactory from scratch.

Some may think that designing factories is a fairly standardized process – but according to Alvaro Rabanos, being creative and thinking outside of the box is a key part of working with factory design. At least at Northvolt.

Exciting news for Northvolt in Germany! Both local municipalities, Lohe-Rickelshof and Norderwöhrden in Schleswig-Holstein, have approved the construction of the Northvolt Drei gigafactory for lithium-ion battery cells in Heide, Germany. Coming off the heels of a €902 million funding approval from the EU commission under the TCTF framework earlier this month, this has been a great start to the year for the German gigafactory.

Northvolt Germany CEO Christofer Haux commented: "Germany's first wind farm was once built in Dithmarschen, and now the most sustainable battery cells will soon be produced here.”
 
Northvolt Drei will not only facilitate the creation of a brand-new industry in the region, but also serve as a driving force in the German green energy transition. The gigafactory itself will be one of the largest industrial projects in Germany - with spill-over effects for the entire northern German region.

To foster a sustainable battery industry, we need sustainable raw material supply chains. Following discussions with various actors in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Northvolt is proud to deepen its engagement in the region. In part, this entails joining the Fair Cobalt Alliance (FCA), with the aim to support in the development of a more socially just mining sector.
 
The responsible way forward for the battery industry is through the development of the DRC mining sector. Open collaboration is a vital tool in this work, and Northvolt encourages all of our stakeholders to lend their support. It will not be simple work, but it is the right and responsible path to take.
