Puraffinity is a spinout company from Imperial College London that specialises in designing and manufacturing novel advanced materials for environmental benefit, such as removing harmful pollutants from water and wastewater. Focusing initially on PFAS removal, Puraffinity has developed an innovative adsorbent media allowing an easily deployable solution for addressing PFAS compliance. In addition, the solution is highly cost effective, providing an attractive Return On Investment for customers, and reduced life-cycle costs.

Founded in 2015, Puraffinity is backed by leading sustainability investors Kindred Capital, Heritage Group Ventures and Investiere (Verve) Capital Partners. 

Puraffinity combines chemistry and material engineering expertise to architect molecular structures that exhibit a high affinity towards target compounds and can bind them effectively. The result is a new class of targeted adsorbent media that selectively captures emerging contaminants such as PFAS. 

The technology we develop can be used for PFAS treatment in different applications and water matrices which cover a variety of markets such as Point of Use, municipal potable water, groundwater remediation, industrial manufacturing, airport/military bases, oil and gas.

A Rising Challenge and Costly Future for Water Treatment!

With both Smart Water Magazine 💧and Water Online highlighting critical issues affecting our industry, I wanted to shed light on the following significant development:

The growing presence of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in pesticides. A recent report estimates that the cost of PFAS clean up for U.S. water districts could reach between $120 billion and $175 billion. These developments pose substantial challenges and prompt important discussions for our field.

Key Insights:
Contamination Risk: PFAS, commonly referred to as "forever chemicals," are increasingly found in agricultural pesticides. These substances can leach into groundwater and surface water, leading to widespread contamination. Their persistent nature means they can remain in the environment for decades, complicating efforts to ensure clean and safe drinking water.

Treatment Challenges: Removing PFAS from water is a complex and costly process. Traditional treatment methods often fall short, necessitating the use of advanced technologies such as activated carbon filtration, ion exchange, and high-pressure membranes. While effective, these technologies come with significant financial and operational costs, adding complexity to water treatment management.

Health Implications: PFAS exposure is linked to serious health issues, including cancer, liver damage, and developmental problems. The long-term health impacts underscore the need for robust water treatment solutions to protect public health. Ensuring that water supplies are free from these contaminants is essential for safeguarding community well-being.

A first-of-its-kind study has found that PFAS or “forever chemicals” — toxic compounds found in everyday beauty and personal care items like sunscreen, waterproof mascara and lipstick — can seep through human skin and enter the bloodstream.
