Josef Aschbacher, European Space Agency - ESA Director General, accompanied by veteran astronaut Luca Parmitano held a meeting with leading Finnish space industrials, and a working lunch with Business Finland yesterday. 

The visit highlighted the strategic space capabilities that Finland can offer, important to ESA’s agenda towards higher autonomy in the field of space technology and exploration. The Director General seeks Finland’s support both towards achieving the objectives of ESA’s Agenda 2025, as well as the recommendations of the recently published report by the High Level Advisory Group (HLAG). HLAG’s recommendations especially called for substantial increase of Europe’s manned and robotic space exploration activities, in which Europe is falling behind the USA and China. Solar Foods' space strategy is well aligned with these strategic initiatives.

During the lunch, #Solein® ice cream was also available for the curious to get a glimpse of the future of food for our space explorers.

Our CEO Pasi Vainikka recently attended the SKS Japan 2023 Global Foodtech Summit – a gathering place for food innovators from all over the world.

The theme of the discussion was “Development of new food system considering environment and human health”. Pasi was joined by Ajinomoto Co., Inc.’s General Manager of Green Business Development Department Masaki Kashihara, with whom we agreed on a strategic alliance this spring.

Now that our participation in Project HYDROCOW is out, we thought it would be a good time to open up the science behind it. 

Our target is to engineer a microbe that converts carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen, manufactured from water with electricity, into beta-lactoglobulin, a major constituent of milk. Instead of relying on heterotrophic microbes that feed on sugar or other high-energy carbon sources derived from agriculture, we are modifying a hydrogen-oxidizing microbe to secrete milk proteins thereby removing agriculture from the equation. This is a challenge our project team is now ready to face. 

With the project being successful, we expect to gain not just a milk producing microbe, but a platform that could be modified in the future to produce other proteins as well. There is a vast pool of ideas to extract from, ranging from edible proteins to various functional and even pharmaceutical proteins, like antibodies.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen delivered a speech today in Strasbourg outlining Europe’s future and presented this year’s State of the Union report. Solar Foods is honored that our work with Solein, a protein out of thin air, is also mentioned in the report: “This is not science fiction – the startup is receiving EUR 33,6 million for a demonstration factory in Vantaa, Finland. The project is also part of the Commission’s hydrogen value chain IPCEI.”

Von der Leyen’s speech and the report offer a comprehensive look into Europe’s present and future, highlighting core values such as sustainability and innovation. And as our pioneering Factory 01, the first production facility of its kind in the world, is getting closer to completion and starting the commercial production of Solein, we can firmly agree that it isn’t science fiction. The future of food is now and we are highly excited for it.
