Proud to announce the publication in the review journal "Progress in Nuclear Energy" of our collaborative research on functional software simulation that enables faster, more precise, and lower-cost digital simulation of any industrial process, including for nuclear energy. 

The research collaboration includes: 
École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, TRANSMUTEX SA, Texas A&M University, and Politecnico di Milano.

This paper investigates the application of the Functional Mock-up Interface (#fmi, https://fmi-standard.org/) to nuclear energy system simulation. This new FMI standard was developed by the automotive and aerospace industries to couple very different codes and numerical models as easily as possible. 
The paper clearly demonstrated the potential of this technology for nuclear applications, and how it may serve as a solid basis for the development of digital twins. For example, it will be possible to combine any number of codes with each other, or even to interchange specialized codes to represent the same component. The paper illustrates this potential with the example of a simplified nuclear power plant, modeling the reactor with GeN-Foam, the secondary circuit (turbine, alternator, etc.) with Modelica and the control system with Modelica/Simulink.

During INSIC 23, I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Franklin Servan-Schreiber  , the CEO of Transmutex SA. Our conversation delved into the fascinating realm of simulation and data analytics. We discussed the intricate work at CERN, and I was astounded by Transmutex's pioneering use of Monte Carlo methods in simulation.

Mr. Servan passionately shared how Transmutex aims to revolutionize simulation-based research by integrating artificial intelligence into their approach. We explored the performance-based operations on platforms like Geant4, MCNP, and Fluka, but what truly captured my attention was Transmutex's vision to catalyze growth in this field through cloud-based operations.

Twenty Two countries announced at COP28 the goal of tripling nuclear energy production by 2050 ! An ambitious goal by any measure, but also from the nuclear waste perspective. At Transmutex we are working hard to propose a scalable solution for the transmutation of 99% of the long-lived nuclear waste and we stand ready to demonstrate the viability of our solution. 

A quick calculation on the need for the transmutation of long-lived nuclear waste in the USA if we triple the nuclear energy capacity: 

Current annual production of nuclear waste in the USA: 2,000 tons
Planned capacity of Yucca Mountain depository in 2008: 70,000 tons
Estimated budget for Yucca Mountain in 2008 $: $98 Billion

Tripling the nuclear capacity will lead to the annual production of 6,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel. 

Therefore, it would require a $98 Billion (2008 $ !) Yucca Mountain size depository every 12 years or less. 

Reminder: The US still does not have a plan in place for a depository since Yucca Mountain was scaped in 2009.  

Transmutex is ready to face the challenge scaling up the transmutation of nuclear waste in order to enable the nuclear industry achieve its ambitious goal.
