Did you know that 2 out of 3 people have little to no idea what it’s like to experience sight loss? It’s something most of us take for granted, but for those with visual impairments, daily life can be a unique challenge. To help address this awareness gap, we've been working closely with the incredible team at The Royal National Institute of Blind People ( RNIB ) to create an immersive app designed to give users a glimpse into the everyday experiences of people living with sight loss. Launched on Wednesday, the app is called Eyeware and it's available to download now. Whether you’re a caregiver, healthcare professional, designer, brand manager or simply curious, this app offers a powerful, empathetic experience of what life can be like for people who are blind or have low vision. Through realistic simulations, Eyeware represents ten of the most common eye conditions, giving users an idea of how these affect everyday life. With 360° videos, the app lets you observe familiar situations from a viewpoint altered by visual impairment. You can try out common tasks while adjusting for different levels of sight loss, revealing the real-world challenges faced by individuals with sight loss every day. Beyond just simulations, RNIB Eyeware also includes powerful, real-life stories from individuals living with sight loss. Their personal accounts offer unique insights that deepen our understanding of the impact of sight loss on daily life. For anyone designing products, services, or spaces this experience is a chance to see first-hand the importance of adopting accessible design principles from the get-go. Conceived by the RNIB, this app prioritises accuracy, respect, and authenticity, offering an immersive and informative journey into sight loss. I know for the team at Zappar it’s been an incredible project to be involved in developing and we’re excited to get it into as many people’s hands as possible. To honour Remembrance Sunday, we wanted to use our new Immersal integration to create a simple digital tribute at the Chiswick War Memorial. The experience uses location-based AR to map the space and then track virtual poppies to the memorial, inviting a moment of quiet reflection on the lives given in service. We hope that the experience provides a small but meaningful way for people to pause and connect with history, blending the past with the present through digital storytelling.
