Either side of labour weekend is the peak of the season here at LIC, and from the bottom to the top of the country everyone is busy as ever with mating! In the Waikato our Newstead loading bay is full of traffic, as our semen straws start their journey around New Zealand. With over 520 AB Technicians working across the country, and that number reaching 800 at the end of the year we’re working hard to get semen straws out to our farmers. We can't deliver the services we do without every cog of the wheel, so we're awfully proud of everyone that contributes to our peak season at LIC. 👏💙

Last week, we hosted a Ugandan delegation at our Newstead, Hamilton headquarters. The delegation was interested in learning about how we are embarking on a project to breed heat tolerant and disease resistant dairy cows for Sub-Saharan Africa, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. 🧬 Our International Dairy Development Manager Jason Schrier provided an overview of the project, and they were extremely interested in furthering the conversation. Jason has been invited to Uganda in January to meet with senior government officials and discuss the finer points of the project and how it could potentially benefit Uganda dairy farmers. Recently two of our amazing Senior Agri Managers, Charlotte Gray and Rosanna Dickson joined Sheryl Haitana and Sarah Perriam-Lampp on The Dairy Exporter Podcast to chat about how we can use MINDA as a tool for understanding what makes an efficient cow. They also discussed how farmers can get the best out of their best cows, the potential limitations of herd data, and ways of measuring efficiency. 📊⭐🐮 “Within MINDA there’s custom reports so farmers can rank cows by any trait of interest, there’s existing ones like MINDA milk for example but it’s about pulling it together with your Agri Manager to enable the forecasting aspect. This Monday, LIC Agri Manager, Tamara Finlay had one of the hardest tasks of her week - judging the ‘dress-up parade’ at Orini Combined School's Calf Club Day! 🐮🎩 Each year LIC supports Calf Club and Pet Days throughout New Zealand by distributing merchandise packs to schools that register their event on the LIC website. The winners get to wear a ‘LIC Winner’ ribbon, while also scoring themselves a pack with sports gear, hats and pens! For decades, LIC has been proud to support local communities, bringing rural neighbours, staff, friends, parents and children together.

#SayHelloTo Tim Beere, our National Artificial Breeding Manager! Tim is responsible for making sure our Artificial Breeding (AB) operations run smoothly from start to finish across the country. Tim grew up on a farm near Cambridge, in a place called Kairangi. Having a rural background led him to a role at PGG Wrightson, where he started on the mail desk and worked his way around the business, quickly becoming the Cambridge Agency Manager at just 21. Tim has a diverse working background outside of the rural industry, he’s found himself working for Disney in London, as well as teaching water skiing in Southern Italy, while most recently working in the residential construction industry for GJ Gardener Homes. When he thought about his next career step, he discussed it with his wife and agreed that his happiest times were in the rural industry. So, like he’d thrown it out into the universe, a role at LIC had popped up. “I saw LIC and thought, hey, fantastic company, great brand, really meaningful work. The role that I am in is a chunky role and very operations focused, which I really enjoy – so it all wound up perfect.” A big part of Tim’s role is spending time with his region managers to understand what’s happening on the ground as the AB technicians visit thousands of LIC farmers across the country and feeding back intel to the rest of the business. “I make sure I'm communicating it to the right people in the business. So, who needs to know what?” Tim joined LIC this year in March and loves to admit that he’s learning something new every day. “I'm just surrounded by subject matter experts - ‘oracles’ as I call them. You know, absolute Jedis, so for me, I love it. I love it because I am really extended and every day I come in, every week I come in, I just learn a little bit more.” Outside of work, Tim is the father of three girls, a private pilot (helicopter) and is the founder of the Blublokes charity, aiming to promote the early detection and prevention of prostate cancer. As well as the inspiring work he does outside of his career, Tim is a true people person and thrives off positive people connection. At LIC we are proud to have people like Tim delivering value for farmers every day.
