Callaghan Innovation is Aotearoa New Zealand’s innovation agency. We activate innovation and help businesses grow faster for a better New Zealand.

As a government agency, we also enhance the operation of New Zealand’s innovation ecosystem, working closely with MBIE, NZTE, NZGCP, Crown Research Institutes, and other organisations that help increase business investment in R&D and innovation.

We're proud to share our Māori Business Engagement Video, a testament to the incredible work being done by innovative Māori businesses across Aotearoa. It showcases the innovation, resilience, and cultural richness that these businesses bring to our economy and communities. 

The film features three of our world-leading Māori customers: AgriSea NZ Seaweed Ltd, Envico Technologies, and WoolAid. Their stories are powerful examples of the impact Māori businesses are making in their respective fields.

Pakihi Māori are growing faster, innovating more, and investing more in R&D than other New Zealand businesses. With the Māori economy worth over $70 billion (and growing), the potential is immense.

Mānawatia a Matariki! Happy Matariki ⭐ Callaghan Innovation takes immense pride in being part of a nation that was among the first to acknowledge an indigenous holiday. What’s more, the mātauranga Māori that enriches this Matariki season is also sparking innovation unique to Aotearoa New Zealand, through the many Māori frontier ventures and tech-driven pakihi who are increasingly making an impact both at home and globally. So much so that the Māori economy is valued at over $70 billion (and growing). As we pause to remember those we’ve lost, express gratitude for our blessings and anticipate the future, we wish you a restful Matariki.

As a Foundation Partner, we were proud to be at this year's Electrify Aotearoa at the St James Theatre in Wellington. The event united 500+ founders, innovators, and investors to empower women in entrepreneurship. It was inspiring to share insights on building startups, raising capital, and expanding globally. Callaghan Innovation recently hosted roundtable breakfasts in Auckland and Wellington with Sir Peter Gluckman, Chair of the Science System Advisory Group (SSAG) and the University Advisory Group (UAG). 

The events provided a unique platform for Aotearoa New Zealand’s innovators to engage with Sir Peter, share their journeys, and discuss the ongoing comprehensive review of our science and innovation system. 
The rooms were packed and buzzing with insightful questions and a palpable passion for creating a world-leading, commercially successful innovation ecosystem for our country. 

A big thank you to Sir Peter Gluckman for his invaluable insights, and to all attendees for their commitment to helping shape the future of science and innovation in Aotearoa New Zealand.
