It was a great night in Washington, DC, as Breakthrough brought together our DC community at the Breakthrough Effect event this week. This summer, Breakthrough middle schoolers beat the summer learning loss that affects so many across the country. 78% of our students maintained or grew their reading skills, and 71% advanced in math—critical gains in the face of typical summer setbacks. We’re also sparking change in education through our Teaching Fellowship, one of the nation’s largest early teacher pathway programs. This summer, 96% of Teaching Fellows said they’d recommend Breakthrough to others, and 78% felt more dedicated to working with and advocating for students in underserved communities. We are grateful that experts like Danielle Sanderson Edwards are shedding light on the complexity of our system of teacher preparation in the US, which is helping Breakthrough provide stronger navigational support to Teaching Fellows who decide they want to teach. Breakthrough is partnering with quality and affordable teacher preparation programs to build articulated pathways from our Teaching Fellowship into these vetted programs. Our hope is that better coordination and integration will result in increased access, and ultimately, our Teaching Fellow alumni entering teaching well prepared and well supported.
