Grading a class of 25 coding projects can be very time-consuming. Now, imagine five CS classes and at least one project a week! Code.org just launched a public pilot of our new AI teaching assistant built into our Code Studio Platform. Here is how we are approaching the development of the tool.

Elevating Teachers: In addition to a human in the final grading decision-making role, we incorporated a tutorial that highlights the information the tool provides to help teachers make their assessment. This includes an AI confidence score, rubric details, highlighted sections of code with assistive descriptions, tips for evaluation, and the ability to give feedback on the AI's accuracy. (Honestly, I think we may be giving too much info - teachers, let us know!)

Improving Pedagogy: Our curriculum comes with professional development that is mostly about pedagogy versus content or the platform. This means learning how the AI tool can augment and complement the teacher, not just how the teacher can use the AI tool.

Slowly: We are going from a couple dozen teachers to 300, then to 3000, so we can learn and adapt as needed. We want to continue working on accuracy (through fine-tuning), and upcoming models will help us get more accurate.

Small Scope: We are using it in only one unit of one course for now (our middle school CS course). It is the unit that is most popular among novice CS teachers, who will benefit the most from the grading assistance and build their capacity to provide effective and timely feedback.

It used to take one of our pilot teachers about 2 hours to grade assignments. Our new AI Teaching Assistant cut that time in HALF. Less time grading means more time providing individual support for every student. That's a win! 🏆
