Rethink Food is a non-profit organization based in New York City that aims to bridge the gap between excess food and communities in need. Founded in 2017, they partner with restaurants, kitchens, and corporations to provide nutritious meals to food-insecure communities. They operate a sustainable commissary kitchen and offer sustainability services to help companies reach their ESG goals. Rethink Food advocates for systemic change and works with government entities. They have distributed meals in NYC, Chicago, Nashville, Miami, and other cities.

Rethink is a nonprofit committed to addressing food inequity by developing practical models that distribute nutritionally dense, sustainable and culturally sensitive meals to communities impacted by Food Insecurity.


Since 2017, generous partners and supporters like you have brought us closer to our goal of creating a more sustainable and equitable food system—helping us provide over 16.7 million meals to vulnerable communities through 180+ community-based organizations and direct over 44 million dollars to 130+ small local restaurants and food establishments; and recover over 2.1 million pounds of excess food to convert into meals, saving 5.4 million lbs of CO2 and 49 million gallons of fresh water.

Yesterday, Rethink Food's ceo, Matt Jozwiak, was invited to join other esteemed community leaders and elected officials across New York State to convene at the White House for The Communities in Action: Building a Better New York event. We heard how the Biden-Harris Administration’s investments and impacts support communities across New York and were able to share real-life examples and personal stories of our local impact in yesterday's sessions. 

We thank the Biden-Harris administration for the platform to share Rethink Food's work, providing culturally competent meals across the 5 boroughs of NYC, and how we are working to address food insecurity in our communities, promote sustainability, and support the small business sector.

Yesterday, Rethink Food’s Founder and ceo Matt Jozwiak, along with 5 of our restaurant meal partners—Ali Ahmed of Brain Food, Zak Khan of Gyroking, Elena Ristovski of Marlow Bistro, LaToya Meaders of Collective Fare, and Angel Sanchez of Chefscape—who work with Rethink Food to provide healthy, delicious and culturally celebrated meals to asylum seekers at shelter sites across the city, were invited to testify at the NYC Council Oversight hearing on the Role of Small Businesses in Shelter Food Procurement.

We want to thank Contracts Committee Chair Julie Won, Small Business Chair Julie Menin, and Economic Development Chair Amanda Farías for convening stakeholders that are supporting asylum seeker food contracts and shining light on the importance of bringing together nonprofit providers that work with small businesses to provide culturally celebrated meals. When government, nonprofits, and the small business community work together, we are able to provide a better service to our newest neighbors.
