A new study by Silent Spring Institute and University of California, Berkeley shows California’s Proposition 65 has helped lower people’s exposures to a number of chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, and reproductive harm. The study is the first to evaluate the effectiveness of Prop 65 at protecting people from harmful substances in their products and the environment and shows the benefits of the law extend nationwide. Our latest analysis identifies 12 toxic chemicals that put female firefighters at increased risk for breast cancer. The chemicals include benzene, PAHs, acetaldehyde, styrene, dioxins, flame retardants, PFAS, and PCBs among others. Firefighters can be exposed to an array of toxic chemicals when putting out fires—building fires, wildfires, and vehicle fires. They also encounter harmful substances in their protective gear, fire station air and dust, and diesel exhaust from firefighter trucks. With more women joining the profession, the findings could inform policies and practices to reduce workplace exposures and inform cancer presumptive laws to include breast cancer. On Nov. 20, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine 's committee on the State-of-the-Science and the Future of Cumulative Impact Assessment is having a one-day workshop in La Place, Louisiana to facilitate discussion with local community members on key cross-cutting themes pertinent to cumulative impacts assessment. Organized with input from the committee’s community and tribal liaison group, the first of three workshops aims to amplify community voices by inviting members to share their lived experiences. Roundtable discussions will center around stressors and impacts being experienced, environmental justice considerations, and a future vision to improve health by integrating community input into environmental decision-making and risk management. The meeting will be livestreamed via the event webpage. Silent Spring's Dr. Julia Brody serves on the committee charged with convening the workshops and developing a consensus report to advise EPA on the practice of cumulative impact assessment. A recent study by Silent Spring Executive Director Dr. MaryBeth Terry and colleagues at Columbia University provides a roadmap for studying the effects of chronic exposure to chemicals in our everyday lives on breast cancer risk. The authors argue for greater investment in new studies that focus on younger and more susceptible individuals and are carried out in diverse communities that are underrepresented in existing cancer cohorts. Silent Spring scientists made a dynamic impact at the 2024 International Society for Exposure Science (ISES) Annual Meeting in Montreal. More than half a dozen staff gave presentations on their latest research on topics ranging from occupational exposures among nurses to chemicals of concern in personal care products.
