Today, with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) , we launched our 3rd assessment on the socioeconomic impacts of the #Gaza war in the State of Palestine. The new assessment estimates that poverty in the State of Palestine will increase to 74.3% in 2024, affecting 4.1 million people, including 2.61 million people who are newly impoverished. It also projects that the gross domestic product (GDP) will contract by 35.1% in 2024 compared with a no-war scenario, with unemployment potentially rising to 49.9%. The assessment suggests that a comprehensive recovery and reconstruction plan, combining humanitarian aid with strategic investments in recovery and reconstruction along with lifting economic restrictions and promoting recovery-enabling conditions, could help put the Palestinian economy on a restorative track to realign with Palestinian development plans by 2034. 🚨 Alarming new data from UNDP Myanmar shows that over 2 million people in Rakhine, Myanmar face starvation as the region's economy collapses. With agriculture, trade and construction at a standstill, only 20% of food needs may be met by early 2025. Thousands of people have lost their lives and homes to tsunamis in Asia-Pacific. But preparedness and early warning saves lives. Over 218,000 students, teachers and local officials have taken part in drills since 2017 as part of our Tsunami Project with the Government of Japan. Through the Project, we have helped schools to assess their tsunami risks, design emergency procedures and evacuation plans, conduct tsunami evacuation drills, and carry out awareness campaigns. This #TsunamiDay , our Senior Advisor on Disaster Risk Reduction Sanny Jegillos reflects on the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and shares lessons for the next generation. 20 years on and in partnership with the Government of Japan, we continue to emphasize tsunami preparedness and education, especially in schools in high-risk areas.
