“As a sustainability officer, you can’t afford to neglect the G in ESG. I had to speak up” those were the words of former DWS Group Sustainability turned whistleblower, Desiree Fixler, as she spoke at the afternoon session of the #IIA21. She shared her thoughts on looking under ‘sustainability’ labels, as well as discussing her departure from DWS.

Salima Lamdouar, Ashley Hamilton Claxton, Samuel Grantham, CFA, and Rebecca Seabrook took part in our Bonds: diversification v dilution of impact panel debate moderated by Murray McEwan. They broke down how to understand why bond funds can have an impact whilst also meeting diversification objectives of Fixed Income.

To close Annette Hender, Chartered Financial Planner, joint founder, partner, and chartered financial planner at Taylor Made Financial Planning , explained how her practice grew to provide a sustainable investment solution that her clients can truly believe in. It comes as a client survey carried out by Taylor Made FP, revealed 86% of clients like the idea of investing some of their funds in sustainable investments.

Philip Spyropoulos, partner at Eversheds Sutherland opened the #IIA21 mid-morning session with his talk on the impending regulatory changes in 2022 and how advisors can prepare for them. Our very own Gavin Francis gave evidence-based insights into the differences between ESG and impact funds plus an update on some of the latest developments to Worthstone's resources. This includes an update to the much-loved Spectrum of Capital infographic (pictured below). 

Next, we heard from the portfolio manager at Ninety One, Graeme Baker as he discussed how advisers can be part of the solution when it comes to tackling the climate crisis and why achieving net zero in the real economy is different from a net-zero portfolio.

Finally, The ESG v Impact- What’s in a name? saw our panel, Ben Constable Maxwell, Tim Crockford, Louise Kooy-Henckel, Abigail Rotheroe and Seb Beloe address one of the most problematic questions being debated. By pitting ESG against Impact it can appear as though the two are going head-to-head, but they aren’t. It’s a case of transparency and going back to the client’s objectives.

A fantastic start to the #IIA21 this morning. Our founder and CEO, Gavin Francis opened the event and was followed by our first speaker, CEO of ShareAction, Catherine Howarth who discussed stewardship and impact.  Martin Todd from Federated Hermes - International delivered a talk on Greenwashing, a key talking point and growing fear within the sector. As he says, by asking the right questions, advisers can avoid being Greenwashed.

Our panel debate saw Jo Little, James King, Andrew Willemite, and Clémence Chatelin, address the key challenges being faced by #ImpactInvesting professionals today and provide best practice tips and practical solutions.

The afternoon session features talks from Desiree Fixler, Annette Hender, Chartered Financial Planner, and Gavin Francis, plus debates on #ESG V Impact and Bonds: diversification vs dilution of impact.
