How to Systematically Conduct PMF Experiments for Your PLG Product 🎯

Everyone starts building with a broad idea of who their Persona would be and a Usecase that will solve a particular Problem. Let's call these the PMF Inputs.

💡 The PMF journey is refining these inputs for user acquisition at a sustainable cost.

Take an English learning app for instance:
Starting Point: Usecase: Improve English speaking 
Persona: English learners 
Problem: Desire to speak English better

Round 1
Bring users in (Consumer app - 1000, B2B PLG - 100) and see who sticks! Use broad message ads at this stage, don’t worry about CAC at this stage.

⭐️ Pro-Tip: Don't optimise for signup conversions now. Infact, add friction to capture: Who they are (Persona), What is their usecase and What is their problem in their own words.

Post-Round 1, you'll know:
1. Who retained and engaged the best/worst from app analytics.
2. Direct inputs from users on persona, use-cases, and problems in their own words.

Merge this info to form 2-3 refined PMF Input Sets whose size is atleast 10% of your initial users. Keep broadening the Inputs until you get a 10% set. 

Examples:
Usecase: TOEFL preparation 
Persona: Non-native English speakers 
Problem: Efficient and affordable TOEFL success

Usecase: Seeking remote support job 
Persona: Latin American users 
Problem: Dollar-paying job

🚨 Note: At this stage, your retention and engagement will still be horrible. That's expected. The idea is to find the best segments among what you have.

Round 2
We now need to get the same number of users from each set through the gate as Round 1 so that we can sharpen our inputs even further.

In this Round, we can use what we know about our best users’ Usecase, Persona and Problem in:
1. Ad Creatives
2. Campaign Targeting

You can even use niche forums to acquire users for free, e.g., Reddit's TOEFL boards.

⭐️Pro-Tip: Every round, should generate segments which have higher top retention and engagement than the previous rounds and give you Sharper PMF Input Sets! If this happens, then you are headed in the right direction! 🎯

Repeat till PMF! ♽
At the end of Round 2, Maybe your top set looks like:
Usecase: Get a remote support job for a US Company
Persona: Women above 30 years from Brazil
Problem: Need a job that pays in dollars, can be done at Home and has flexible hours

Now, keep repeating the Rounds until you get to a Cost per retained user you can live with! 🤝
