Want to know more about the GroundTEM Explorer Coils? Here are some frequently asked questions: Which instruments are compatible with the GroundTEM Explorer Coils? The ABEM GroundTEM i5 and i10; they are not compatible with the WalkTEM or WalkTEM 2 instruments. How deep can the Explorer Coils reach? Depth is a notoriously hard thing to predict with TEM – there are no simple “rules of thumb” that can reliably estimate depth capability. In conditions suited to TEM survey, it should be possible to achieve depths of 75 – 150m. How are datasets from the Explorer Coils processed? Data are handled in the same way as soundings from the larger TX loops. Aarhus SPIA is normally recommended for 1D processing and inversion of individual soundings. Aarhus Workbench can generate profiles or blocks of data from these for further analysis and visualization. Can I do TEM measurements in urban areas? TEM (Transient ElectroMagnetics) is a very efficient geophysical tool widely used for different groundwater and geological applications. It provides rapid information on stratigraphy, and particularly the presence of conductive layers, to depths of almost 800 meters (depending on configuration). However, TEM is generally unsuitable in urban environments or, as a “rule of thumb”, within 150-200 meters of buildings and infrastructure. Time domain transient electromagnetics (TEM) is a non-destructive, rapid tool for the search, mapping and monitoring of groundwater, mineral deposits and environmental change. Depths of hundreds of metres can be investigated in minutes and the work can be finished whilst other survey methods would still be setting up. The current flowing in the Tx loop will create a magnetic field. When the current is switched off, this magnetic field collapses creating electrical currents in the ground.
