Hapag-Lloyd AG is a German international shipping and container transportation company, formed in 1970 through a merger of Hamburg-American Line (HAPAG) and Norddeutscher Lloyd. It is the 4th biggest in the world.

Hapag-Lloyd Aktiengesellschaft, together with its subsidiaries, operates as a liner shipping company worldwide. Its vessel and container fleets are used for the transportation of general and special cargo, various dangerous goods, and coffee, as well as reefer cargo covering pharmaceuticals. The company also offers bilateral EDI, a directly connected electronic data interchange; operates an e-commerce portal that provides real-time access to transport data, as well as services to manage customer's supply chain data and connect to their carriers through one interface;mobile app that allows to manage shipping process; and provides e-mail and security information services. In addition, it provides inland container transportation services through truck and train. As of December 31, 2021, the company's fleet comprised 253 container ships with a total capacity of 1.8 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU); and a container capacity of approximately 3.1 million TEU. Hapag-Lloyd Aktiengesellschaft was founded in 1847 and is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany.

The Philosophy

With a fleet of 264 modern container ships and a total transport capacity of 2.0 million TEU, Hapag-Lloyd is one of the world’s leading liner shipping companies. In the Liner Shipping segment, the Company has around 13,500 employees and 400 offices in 135 countries. Hapag-Lloyd has a container capacity of 2.9 million TEU – including one of the largest and most modern fleets of reefer containers. A total of 113 liner services worldwide ensure fast and reliable connections between more than 600 ports across the world. In the Terminal & Infrastructure segment, Hapag-Lloyd has stakes in 20 terminals in Europe, Latin America, the United States, India, and North Africa. The roughly 2,600 employees assigned to the Terminal & Infrastructure segment handle terminal-related activities and provide complementary logistics services at selected locations.

Hapag-Lloyd closed the first nine months with Group EBITDA of USD 4.5 billion (EUR 4.2 billion) and Group EBIT of USD 3.0 billion (EUR 2.8 billion). Group net income was USD 3.4 billion (EUR 3.2 billion). These results are significantly below last year's levels due to the severe change in market conditions.

With the further expansion of our terminal business, the activities of the Hapag-Lloyd Group have been split for the first time into the business segments “Liner Shipping” and “Terminal & Infrastructure”.

Have you ever wondered how our seafarers celebrate their birthdays at sea? 🎈Thanks to the Chief Cook on board our “Berlin Express,” birthdays are always celebrated with a delicious cake. Meet Jun Rey Lopez, who has been cooking since he was 15 years old. Growing up with his grandparents, Jun cooked for them until he graduated from college.

“The kitchen is my playground. It's where I learned everything and grew professionally,” he said. Cooking and baking are what he loves to do. He comes from a family where his brothers, uncles, and most of his cousins are seafarers. He told us that seafaring is an important part of the family structure.

“Every time someone has a birthday or special occasion onboard, I always bake a cake to make their day special and memorable since they're far away from home,” he said. “Their smiles and gratitude upon receiving the cakes make me feel at home and like family,” he added. For Jun, seeing his colleagues happy on their special day makes him happy!

For many years, we have been dedicated to recycling our vessels solely in certified green ship breaking yards that comply with high environmental and social standards. 🌱

Our Hapag-Lloyd Green Ship Recycling process is centered around five main steps.

Reflagging
We are bringing vessels under the German flag before recycling them to ensure that this process is in accordance with the highest standards in the industry and, as a result, contributes to a sustainable future.

EU-Compliant
The vessel is sold to the shipyard based on its weight. However, rather than relinquishing any further responsibility, Hapag-Lloyd aims for long-term, EU-compliant partnerships.

Recycling Yard
The ship is dismantled and recycled in an eco-friendly way. All hazardous materials that cannot be recycled are identified beforehand to ensure that they are 100 percent disposed of or recycled.

Removal
After the vessel has been dismantled, the parts are transported to steel mills. The used steel is shredded into smaller pieces here.

Steel Melting
The small steel particles are melted down at more than 1,500 degrees Celsius. They can then be reused, such as for a completely new ship or for a new bow on a ship that is still in service.
